Default Jet hot LTs / Mac midlengths

I have another question about headers for our cars...I am goin to purchase headers within the next couple of months but I cant decide between jet hot long tubes or mac midlengths. If I were to buy the jet hots would I need to buy a y pipe? are the jet hots really going to give me that much more of a power increase over the macs? I'm going to buy one of these, I dont want to go with shorties... thanx

1. Yes, you will have to buy a new y-pipe to fit the longtubes.
2. Yes, you'll see an extra ~10 rwhp from longtubes over shorties/middies.
3. Shorties and midlengths are practically the same, power wise.

If you don't have emissions to worry about, and you don't have any plans to lower your car, there's no reason not to go with longtubes. Spend the extra dough, you won't regret it. Especially when it comes time to do a cam swap.

Midlengths are way better for street applications. If you search camaroz28.com in the lt1 section there was a post awile back when someone did a side by side test of tuned mid/long tubes. The mids dominated up until 4500+ when the longtubes started to get a slight edge. The tradeoff was so good that on mild applications I would recommend mids. If you plan on heads and cam its really up to you as the long tubes will probably be slightly better at the track. But if you just do a little stoplight racing and plan on no more than a cam definately get mids.

LT's will offer you more power under the curve which is good for the street. On a stock engine yes the mids will slightly out perform the LT's. but as soon as you start to mod the car and allow it to breathe better the mids will not perform as well as the LT's.

So why not save your self the trouble and just install the LT's now. They sound better any way.

fastta is pretty much on the money. Stock motor, you won't really see much of a difference to justify the extra price. However, once you break into the motor and start to modify your valvetrain though, the longtubes will highly outperform midlengths.

This took forever to find. I'm still looking for the better post with the side by side numbers. When I find it I'll edit and post the link.

I got Macs on the '95 Z28, great fit, easy install, noticable power difference, but I wont make that same mistake on the LS1 when I do Headers on that one. Like the others on this tread have said if close to stock no real difference, but I know not the Macs on my '95 could use a upgrade now.( but they really were easy to install.)

Alright, I decided I'm going to go with LT's and order them in the next few months. Is there anyway to run long tubes and lets say a hooker y pipe and still have a cat? or will I have to make a run to my local muffler shop and have a custom y pipe fabricated in order to have a cat?
thanx for all the help
