Default How does a cam effect gas mileage?

I'm looking to ugrade my cam and heads i was wondering how it will effect fuel ecconomy. Right now i see 20/27, my engine has 62k, and i have emmissions. With our emmissions if you spend more than $600 on emmission related parts and labor, you can get a waiver so i am going to not even worry about emmissions. Also there are certain car enthusiasts who will pass you for the love of the car, or who you can pay.

Anyway i was looking at a thread and saw the 1LE, 2LE,and 3LE packages. I was looking to go with the 3LE, LT's, and pretty much all of the bolt-on's. I was just wondering how this would efect my fuel ecconomy. The 1LE is like the Hotacam and the 3LE is like the 847.

He's right. With the exception of exhaust upgrades and the upgrades on the intake side, pretty much everything else will worsen your gas mileage.

Isn't the modern combustion engine only like 17% or 30% efficient? Not that this has anything to do with it, but just trying to remember. Any idea of how much of a loss i will have?

I'm running LE heads, 3600 stall now(used to run the 3000), 3.73's, and a small Joe O. cam. Since the cam is small it helps me out with gas mileage, but I'm getting 19-21mpg with mixed driving and 17-18mpg all city/racing. I'm running the times in my sig.

Wow your set up is EXACTLY what i was going to go with. I was just gonna get a LE head/cam packaged and 42lb injectors, but the same. Those are awsome times! exactly where i want it to be.

42lb injectors will be too big, stick with some 30lbs. I have the le1 heads but with REV 2.0/1.56 valves. I run such a small cam because I want my car to be a sleeper(Lloyd wanted me to run the le1 cam, but I had him have Joe make me a smaller cam with less lope), and with the idle up and through a stock muffler you can't hear the cam at all. It sounds like it might have a catback and thats it. My buddy just put in the le1 cam and it sounds MEAN compared to my car. Email me if you want a soundclip of the car. a97blackformula@yahoo.com

If your looking for gas mileage, buy a kia. The heads and cam will eat your mpg up, but thats any horse power in general

It's nothing with gas mileage like that. My TT 3000gt got 17mpg and that was fine. My dad had a truck with a 454 and it got 8mpg. I just didnt want much less than 17 is all. I think around 15mpg would be fine. I am only concerned becuase this will be my daily driver and i want to be somewhat reasonable. I'd also like to put it in the mid 11's with about $3500 which i think could be possible if i do all the work myself.

skinnies,

I just sent you an email requesting a soundclip as well. I'm interested in this, and even more so with the LE2 setup. I have the cc305 right now, nice drivability, passes smog, and nice mild lope to it. But once I do smog again, I wanna try something a lil meaner. If either of those cams sound like the cc306, that'll be even more convincing

MY $.02 is that I drove from here to Tallahassee Florida on a single tank of gas (had to fill up as soon as I rolled into town) when I just had headers and bolt-ons. Since I've added a stall, a big cam, and LE heads. I made the trip again a month ago, and got the exact same mileage.

Your results may vary, cruising I get the same MPG as before. When I get on it, its DEFINETLY a lot less.

The more overlap in your cam the less mpg you will get. Since the stock cam has 45* of overlap if I remember correctly then you can get yourself into trouble quickly.
