Default k & n air intake worth it?

I just signed up on this site, and I have owned a 97 z28 for about a year now and still have it stock, im looking to start building her up, right now I'm running about 15.1@94mph at the track, still getting used to shifting. I'm looking into cold air intakes, and the only things that places offer me is the K&N replacement air intake for about $240. The reported HP gain on the site is 18hp, does anyone have any info to support or disuade the use of the intake? Thanks

15.1?! aye carumba thats slow!! i do 14.1-14.5 depending on atmospheric conditions at the track. Stock except for Ramair and K&N filter.

I did pull to 16's when i spun a good bit off the line, first time first run ever i went through the waterbox.. OOPS never did that again

second time i was the first racer after a guy blew his engine down the track oiling it. the cleanup left a nice slick track..

The FIPK is a fine mod to do. I would do your full exhaust before it though, or almost anything for that matter.

This thread wreaks of noobage.

You'll be lucky if you get 5 horses to the wheels with an intake.

If you think it's normal for any stock LT1 to run low 15s, shoot yourself.

Hey, I told him not to get it over an exhaust

LT1's in the 15's have to have 300,000+ miles on them if they are being driven correctly.

edit: whoops, I forgot to add the most important part of that post

What about in conjuction with other mods ie; headers and exhaust. Don't they work as complinents to other mods by allowing the engine to breath better. (im about to purchase a moroso CAI used)

Well, it isn't quite like the 03 Mustang GT to the 03 Cobra, but having owned both, there is no camparison to the two in stock form in 3rd gear.

Don't want to debate this again, my bad

when you're on the track, how high do you take your RPMS? I've been taking mine to 5500, is it safe to go slightly higher to 6? I've been launching at 2k and it sends the wheels spinning, other times I give it too little and she will almost die and it will be a slow start, does anyone have any tips for me to get my time down?

I did mine at 1800 actually. Little wheel spin and no bog. Of course, it only netted me 2.0 60 footers but it was pretty good.
