Lt1 HotCam Will my friend's 96 TA with full exhaust, full bolt-ons and hand ported heads beat my LS1? Currently I can beat him easily with his ZZ...something cam. I am not sure, but tomorrow he is getting the LT1 hotcam, and new valvetrain kit that will eliminate his valve float. Should I be worried? At the track, I can beat him by at least 2 tenths and ~3mph, but that will change with his new cam. Am I going to lose? My mods in sig.

Well with the Hotcam kit he will have more lift with the 1.6 rocker's and the hotcam has more lift (.525/.525) than the ZZ4 cam (.474/.510) You say he hand ported those heads, now they are gonna breath better. If he gets it tuned to all these changes, he is probably gonna get you out the hole pretty good. But I bet it will be real close at the end of the track. The LS's have a real smooth powerband once the rpm's get up there.
It could have also been a ZZ9 or whatever TPIS sells. 212/226 .483/.520 112, the specs look very tempting. Think the reason it is seldom heard of is that last I looked the price was downright stupid, like you could go custom for a little over half the cost of theirs.

I have the LT4 hot cam, ported heads, LT's, exhaust, 3:73's and other bolt ons and my buddy has an 01 WS6 with LT's, lid and 3:73's. His car doesn't have the down low trq of mine but once we get topped out and those damn LS1's start breathing we are dead even or he is pulling me by about 1/2 a car length. He doesn't leave me but everytime we get wound out in a gear he inches forward and then we shift and I stop him and then it happens all over again. My car put down a little over 320hp and trq last time it was dynoed and we haven't done his yet though.
I guess what I am trying to say is that up top those damn LS1's scream!

I raced my buddy, and man it was not even as close as before. I used to start pulling on him when I shifted into 3rd gear, and now I start pulling on him all through 2nd. It's like I put 3 or 4 car lengths on him by the time we hit 80mph. Does he need a tune or is this just a fluke. He should have gained with the HotCam over the ZZ3. He's running a PCM setup for the ZZ3, will a PCM from say...PCM4LESS.com that's calibrated for his new cam help him out. I feel bad because I really wanted him to beat me so it would give me incentive to "catch up."

Tuning is essential for maximum performance. Especially something like a cam change. I got my car tuned after adding Long Tubes.
