Default A4 question

This probably goes in the Street racing section but I don't want to hear from all those arrogant LS1 guy's "Your cars slow, get an LS1". But when race I sport shift my tranny. I keep it in 1st just to make sure I get the max off the line acceleration you get with the gearing. When I shift into 2nd though, it sometimes hits the rev limiter. I always put into 2nd when it hits around 4500rpms but sometimes it will hit the rev limiter. Should I just run withit in the 4th gear mode or not? Keep in mind I have a hydraulicly shifted tranny not an electronicly shifted one.

It all depends on if you can shift faster than your tranny can by itself.

I manually shift mine when Im messing around... If I leave it in 3rd (D) I can tell a huge difference.. I shift too early when I shift manually. There is no real reason to manually shift when im racing.... Its nice when I want to run from a roll or cut some corners...

Well ever since I put those headers on I noticed that when I floor it, it will sometimes hit the rev limiter when it gets real high rpm wise, or it could be the valves floating. Sometimes it goes up into 5800 or even past 6000. That spooks me so I try not to do that. I guess I got to experiment and get my technique down, and put a shift kit in eventually.

You shouldn't manually shift your A4. That should only be done with a transmission that is built with a manually shifted valve body. Your 4L60 (700-R4) was not made to be manually shifted. I would suggest getting a shift kit. It will shift the transmission quickly and firmly. A B&M shift kit for a 4L60/700-R4 for around $50. You can put it in your self in about a day but I would NOT recommend it since you could easily loose the small check ***** in the valve body. You can get it put in at a transmission shop for around $50-$70.

Awe screw a shift kit Depending on the miles I get a sure cure put in but not much more then that.

Progam the damn thing and just race in 3rd I have stock calibrated VBs living behind 500hp Motors with programing

BTW when programing correctly manual shifting is not an issue. with out it you will always find it better to let the PCM do the shifting for you

LOL

Got me there. I missed the 93 part. You would be correct on using a nice kit on it. B&M is one of the better ones and I personaly feel the most populrt one is the worst

For the 94 up now See above LOL

that's exactly what i was waiting to hear. I don't know the 4L60/700-R4 very well, so I decided it'd be best not to give out false info. I have never shifted my 4L60E since I've owned my Z28. In fact, I don't think I've ever been in 2nd or 1st gear. Just OD and D.
