This might be a stupid question but is SLPs loudmouth exaust street leagal and worth the money? Is there a better system out there?

No, it's not street legal (and technically, anything you do to your car that replaces OEM parts with aftermarket parts is illegal). It may be emission's legal but the problem with this exhaust is that it has no muffler (no matter what anyone says, a resonator is NOT a muffler) and that it may be too loud to drive around town.

In my opinion, no other exhaust for the LT1 can match it's sound. It's also definitately worth the money. It's one of the cheapest cat-backs you'll find. It will make your car sound like it has aftermarket headers. Most people on this board will tell you that it's too loud, especially if you go for the headers and no cats (which is the setup I have). You'll also hear complaints about the "drone" and "backfire". I just think that some people are a little too sensitive. It's just power in its raw form.

To answer your second question, there really is no "better system." All systems will perform just as well as the other (even your stock cat-back will perform just as well as the others). The only difference between any of them will be look, sound, and price. That being said, favorites seems to be Hooker (cheap), SLP 2OTL (mid-price, which, by the way, looks awkward on a Firebird), Borla (pricey), and GMMG (very pricey).

Oh, one more thing, there's no such thing as a stupid question.

I guess I'll be the one to offer a totally opposite view to LT1 Guy.

The SLP Loudmouth is a love-hate catback. Some love it, some hate it. I happen to take the side of the latter. The loudmouth has no trademark sound. You could accomplish the same sound by using a straight exhaust. Lots of rasp, lots of backfiring, and lots of drone. I may be too sensitive, but I prefer a car with a mellow-but-jizzworthy tone over a car that's just ***** out loud and obnoxious.

About the price thing- $425 is a lot to pay for just piping, a resonator, and tips.

You could find a much better catback for the money, in my opinion.

I have had it on my car for a year or two now, daily drove with it. I bought mine used, paid 140 for it. I dont think its worth buying a cat back new when people sell them all the time for some thing different. I have my stock cat in place so it sounds good, I get comments that it sounds mean from a lot of people. Its also fairly light.

depends on where you live how the police deal with the sound ordnances. Loudmouth IMHO sounds very raspy with longtubes and no cats, and the loud does not bother me if it sounds deep and mean, my Borla is very loud, but deep with heads/cam so I like it. I've also heard LM on a stroked LS1 that sounded really good and nothing IMO sounds worse than LM on an Ls1 much less an LT1. If you can get LM used and cheap go for it, not a bad system and performance wise like others said it's comparable. Borla can also be raspy but not as bad, especially once you get away from stock, cam, heads, etc. It just gets deeper. But it's very pricey too.

I run a borla catback with a blower, cam, and full exhaust. I love the way it sounds. IM me on AIM if you want a sound clip.

I've had no problems. I've been pulled over for speeding tickets but no police officer, sheriff deputy, or highway patrolman has ever said anything negative about it.

I have some good sound clips of mine idling with JetHot LT's, Borla and a nonstock engine, I need a place to host them though.
