It can be programed to control the tranny but I would suggest instead getting an OBD1 pcm. OBD2 tuning and logging software is much more expensive than OBD1. To use an OBD1 pcm with that engine you will need to do one of two things either change the knock sensors or you can put a resistor on certain pins in the pcm to make the pcm work with the '97 knock sensors.
LT1 Edit for OBD2 is I am fairly sure over $500 and locked to one VIN(see wont do a second pcm if you have a spare) and that does not log anything but does include a cable. Then figure another $250+ for a logger or at least $40 for a simple scanner.
For OBD1 LT1 Edit it is like $200 plus a cable for another $65, or Tunercat which is $90 then the $65 for a cable, and with either of those spend $90 on Datamaster for logging(Freescan is free but nowhere near as nice). See how using an OBD1 pcm just makes sense. It will plug into the wiring fro the '97 motor just fine.

so you suggest I get a obd1 computer and install obd1 style knock sensors. what years are obd1 cars? and and what about the wiring harness? what would need to be done to go from an obd2 conversion to obd1?? is there any drawbacks to going obd1 vs obd2???

thanks for all the great Info!!

No wiring mods. Only drawback is OBD1 codes are not as detailed but then again OBD1 codes and logging are cheaper to retrieve and the logging is better than more detailed codes. This is a very popular mod for the 96 Impalas and Caprices it is actually cheaper to get an OBD1 pcm a cable to use to connect to the car and professional tuning than what just most OBD2 tuning alone costs.
