Default lt1 top end

is the lt1 really that slow on top-end??? im looking for a set up that will not only get low e.t.'s but will still be highway fast (no point in having all that power if u get passed by a little sport compact on the highway). i want to take on an lt1 turbo project, but all the talk about the crappy top-end is turning me off.

LT1 topend isn't the greatest due to the stock heads, but if you're planning to do something as major as a turbo setup then it won't matter at all since you should be swapping in ported intake and ported raised runner heads long before a power-adder comes into the picture.

Stoch heads are decent the stock cams on the otherhand are not, besides a turbo is all about torque just gear it appropriately and you will have fun.

Yes. LT1's with stock heads, even ported stockers, are not top end champs.

I tried long tubes, they helped a little.
I tried ported and polished stock castings... that helped a little more.

I tried Nitrous... PROBLEM SOLVED!

its all in how you build the engine. for instance an lt4 or lt4 converted Lt1 with ported heads and a ZZ9 cam will make its peak numbers at or over 6000. thats torque and horse power. thats plenty of top end pull right there. theres also plenty of low end. a CC306 needs ported heads for optimal performance. that cam doesnt come in until 3000 or there abouts. it pulls very well to the top end. so dont listen to what those that dont know are saying. its all in how you build it.

long tube headers help tremendously. i finally got mine on after having them for months. its pulls very well, but there is always more there.

what top end , LT1s just dont have it, some nice heads ,thats the ticket. And even thats hard to get , stock heads are junk even ported by the Head gods, the best set of LT1 heads i have ever seen were 280cfm at .600 lift. Weak!!!!!!!

an LT1 is basically a SBC just a little different...
thats like saying small blocks have no top end, ....
not trying to toot my own horn but I've trapped 114 with a puny hotcam, and ported my own stock heads, first set Ive ever ported no less.

Weak compared to race stuff, very nice as street parts go, many of the lowerend gen1 aftermarket heads only flow 220-30 about the same as the late aluminum LT1 and iron LT1 heads. Sure LS1 stuff is better but it won't fit.

that has nothing to do with topend power. sure the flow numbers may not be that great when compared to say the LS heads, but again high lift numbers have nothing to do with topend power.

i dont think they have that bad of top end pulling power. but of course i used to own a 5 liter stang i raced a honda v tec that had bunch of bolt ons from a 70MPH roll and pulled him from the get go. i jsut cant wait to try out the nitrous as soon as two of my parts get here.

**** the LT1s in Stock Eliminator are forced to run stock UNPORTED heads (its in the rules but some guys acid port) and cams with NO more than stock lift, just an assload of duration, im talkin 260's and 270's at .050 but they trap 125+!!! there is nothing wrong with the lt1s top end power, just stock it's weak.

I reached 170mph *53xxrpm in OD, 3:42 rear* in roughly 1 mile *I counted off the distance in my 05 G6*

That was will boltons/ported heads.... my stock headed, CC306 would have surpassed that EASILY. If thats not topend..I don't know what you guys consider topend.
