302 Lt1
Has anyone thought about using the rotating assembly (crank and rods) from an L99 (4.3L V8 from a Caprice) to build a 302CI LT1?
What do you guys think of the idea?
I'm swapping an LT1 into a Datsun 240Z and intend to Auto-X and road race it. I won't need as much low end torque in such a light car and could use the REV capability the shorter stroke would provide. I know the valve train is the weak point and I would probably end up spending alot more money upgrading it than the bottom end but would my idea even work?
As for valve train I'm thinking I'd use solid lifters with heavy duty springs to avoid float. I'd be shooting for a red-line in the 7500-8000 RPM range.

That's an awesome idea. I've seen a concept from GM with a 302 LS1, but never seen or heard about any destroked LT1s or LS1s besides that. I bet it'd be fun as hell revvin an LT1 that high.
Yes, I remember that old article, I've still got the magazine. That car had one of the best looking 4th Gen Fbody hoods that I have even seen. It (the hood) was never produced I guess, just a one off.

The inability of the factory pcm to rev beyond 7000rpms is the biggest hurdle I see to trying this project, personally I would rather keep a 350 and not have to rev beyond the pcms limits and avoid the aftermarket engine managment costs.

I had an L99 in my Camaro for a while. I got it to run 7.8's in the eigth shifting at 7200 rpm. It had a mild cam (.413/.430 lift), stock heads, intake, throttle body, factory pistons, and factory rods. That motor was a lot of fun and has a ton of potential. It's a shame that the IHRA removed fuel injection from Stock GT.
