Default 302 Lt1

Has anyone thought about using the rotating assembly (crank and rods) from an L99 (4.3L V8 from a Caprice) to build a 302CI LT1?

What do you guys think of the idea?

I'm swapping an LT1 into a Datsun 240Z and intend to Auto-X and road race it. I won't need as much low end torque in such a light car and could use the REV capability the shorter stroke would provide. I know the valve train is the weak point and I would probably end up spending alot more money upgrading it than the bottom end but would my idea even work?

As for valve train I'm thinking I'd use solid lifters with heavy duty springs to avoid float. I'd be shooting for a red-line in the 7500-8000 RPM range.

That's an awesome idea. I've seen a concept from GM with a 302 LS1, but never seen or heard about any destroked LT1s or LS1s besides that. I bet it'd be fun as hell revvin an LT1 that high.

Yes, I remember that old article, I've still got the magazine. That car had one of the best looking 4th Gen Fbody hoods that I have even seen. It (the hood) was never produced I guess, just a one off.

And I want to go the other way. I have an L99 in my '94 Z28 right now, want to put a 383 in it eventually.

I'll trade my L99 crank for a stroker crank!

I wouldn't be real confident spinning a factory cast crank and factory rods to 7500+ rpm. That kind of rpm and higher really demands some good quality components. JMO.

HUH, carbed or what the stock pcm is only good to about 7K. Yes the L99 likes to rev but that is partially due to the fact that GM used the same cam in it as they did the b-body LT1 due to the reduced cubes the cam acts bigger. There are guys running F.A.S.T. spinning stock components over 7K don't know how fast I would want to spin them beyond that . I actually gave the rotating assembly from my old L99 to a guy that was going to build a 306(not a 302 because of the overbore), he was figuring on F.A.S.T. and 8K project never took off.
The inability of the factory pcm to rev beyond 7000rpms is the biggest hurdle I see to trying this project, personally I would rather keep a 350 and not have to rev beyond the pcms limits and avoid the aftermarket engine managment costs.

mine would go to 7100 before the PCM freaked out. Just a stock PCM with LT1 edit.

I had an L99 in my Camaro for a while. I got it to run 7.8's in the eigth shifting at 7200 rpm. It had a mild cam (.413/.430 lift), stock heads, intake, throttle body, factory pistons, and factory rods. That motor was a lot of fun and has a ton of potential. It's a shame that the IHRA removed fuel injection from Stock GT.
