Question which rockers are best

I have a 1996 LT1, can I use 1.6 ratio roller rockers, and if so do I have to change valve springs ?

you don't have to change valve springs, but while you're in there it doenst hurt. You can use 1.6 Roller Rockers just fine..

You can use 1.6 rockers as said before, you need them for 3/8 studs, unless you plan to upgrade to 7/16th.

Really a good idea to change the springs out. the lt4 springs will work well and can be had for under 50 bucks.

If you get a self aligning rocker, you can bolt it on and go. It will be a little loud ticking though.

A better design is non self aligning. These require hardened pushrods and guideplates, but are a better design and quiter.

Comp Cams Pro Magnum 1.6/1 RR are a good choice and I run them on my Vette. You need to trim the drip tabs to make them fit properly. Other than that, they are great!

My Comp cams pro Mag rockers aren't very loud at all. Part of it is in the oil you use.

I've ran Crower NSA in mine for several years now. They're super quiet, and they're fully rebuildable from the roller tip to the trunions.

Hey with the non self aligning rockers do you have to adjust often or what? The self aligning ones i heard are more prone to wear is that true?

Question

When switching to roller rockers on an LT1, are they bolt on or is there some adjustment? I'd also like to know, can you change the camshaft with the engine in the car on a 1996 camaro?

If they are self aligning roller rockers they are a direct bolt on.

All the SA cars ive heard are crane rockers (or the lt4s, same thing). Not sure on oil choices on all of them, but one for sure is Mobile 1.

My car has the NSA Pro Mags, and they are deadly silent. As said above, you can modify the valve cover in about 5 min max with a pair of pliars to clear the rockers. Steel is a much better alternative to any aluminum bodied rocker though IMO.

The rockers require no adjustment after you first do them either SA or NSA. You find zero lash, add your preload (depends on lifter you are using) and then tighten down the jam nut and forget about it.

SA rockers keep themselves centered by the roller tip. It has a groove on it which follows the valve tip. However there is a little play there and they can wobble back and forth making the clacking noise.

NSA use pushrod guideplates to keep them straight.

Yes you can change the cam with the engine in the car. You will need to remove the radiator/fans and the whole front of the engine.

Many LT1 owners like 5w-30 M1 and as I am sure you have seen me type before that is not a good oil for the LT1 and that is likely a big part of why roler rockers get a bad rap for being too niosy. The 5w-30 M1 and 10w-30 M1 are just barely 30wt. and are very close to being 20wt. The LT1 prefers a high 30wt. or low 40wt. to find out more on oils and exaxtly where each one falls in the range defined as 30wt, 40wt. etc. try http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi
