Default Raising the engine?

I know this sounds like a dum question but what is the easiest way to jack the engine up? What I am planning on doing is change the cam, but I was reading in my trusty haynes book, and it says you must take the oil pan off in order to take the timing cover off.
All I have is a 2 1/2 ton floor jack, and dont have access to a cherry picker, and I didnt think you would beable to jack it up from the bottom since the oil pan has to come off. Once you get the engine up whats the best way to stabilze the engine. (a board and jack stands?)

And if you guys have any tips in changing the cam they would be helpful since this will be the first time.
Thanks.

i don't know about the LT1 but if you really have to do that. sometimes you can loosen the pan bolts then just drop the front end of the pan, but leave the back still bolted and get it off that way.

I have always just lossened up the first 6 or so bolts on each side of the pan and it drops enough to get the timing cover off. Be very careful taking the cover off though because the pan gasket tends to tear when it gets older. Ive also taken the pan off(for other reasons) and I always get a big flat piece of wood(a 1x6 works great for me) and put it inbetween the jack and the tranny pan and it lifts the motor right off the mounts, after you take the bolts out of course.

I tore my gasket when removing the cover, can't wait to install the new one in a few says. I also recommend you be very careful when you remove it.

Yup, no need to drop the pan completely. Since this is your first time....better buy a couple of extra gaskets and a boatload of patience. Take your time and make sure it's sitting in there right before you tighten it all back up.

I didn't have to drop the pan either for the timing cover. If you do the seals in the cover while it's off, don't put the water pump drive shaft seal on until the cover is already on or you will probably tear it. You can beat it on with a socket after the cover is installed. You'll understand what I mean when you do it.
