Default Which headers to go with?

I've got a 95 trans am and i'm re-placing the entire exhaust system. I've already got my GMMG catback and now i'm tryin to find some headers/ory. I was originally going to get some new coated pacesetter LT's and ORY but then i found a set of used coated FLP LT's and ORY for about the same price. The coating on the FLP's is in good condition around the head's and spark plugs but a little rusted around the collector's.

I must say I'm a little iffy about buying a used setup when I can buy a new one for around the same price. I've heard the FLP's are better but i don't have any experience with either.

Which setup would be the best to go with? Or is there another setup out there that I might be more pleased with that cost about the same?

Any input would be much appreciated!

Definitely go longtubes. FLP or Pacesetters, but if you want a REAL challenge with an install, go with Jet-Hot LT's. I just finished putting in the Jet-hot's on a friend's car, and we had to drop the k-member 6 inches and lift one side of the engine just to get the Driver-side header in. My other friend's pacesetter's went in a LOT easier.

This is totally my opinion but I am not a huge fan of GMMG with LT's unless you run cats, then it sounds ok. LT's are where the power is though.

If you want an affordable setup, go with some LT Hooker Super Comps and coat them yourself or buy them precoated. Probably not the best sounding, but I've seen it get sh*t done and get it done well.

do not get rid of your cats. i have a gmmg on my 97 and i put on some slp headers with off road pipe that a friend gave me, they sounded like ****!!! way too much rasp and sounded like a farm truck. i got rid of those and stuck my stock manifold back on for now. im going to be ordering some pacesetters and im having a custom catted y pipe built.

I wouldn't go with the FLP's. Mine are hell when changing spark plugs. The fact that it's a full sytem is nice, but spark plug access is a biggie for me. I'm looking at Kooks right now.

This is the reason why I like the flp setup. I can run the y-pipe with or w/out cats because it comes as a kit like ss2nv said.

I'm really not that worried about spark plug access all that much. How difficult was it to install the FLP's and also how difficult is it to change out the cats in the y-pipe? And Kooks are still a thought in my mind also, everybody that has them seem to really love em.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback!

Keep the suggestions coming!

Ditto, i've heard FLP's are horrible for spark plug access and i thought i read some people have to pull the header to do plugs. They are suppose to be a nightmare.

If i went with the Kooks LT's and ORY...could I have an exhaust shop fab cats into the y-pipe? Does this sound like it would be a good setup with GMMG?

I feel torn between FLP LT's with Y-pipe (choice of catted or offroad whenever) and Kooks Stainless LT's with catted y-pipe. I'd like to hear GMMG with an ORY and a catted y to see which I like more. I've had my GMMG for a couple weeks now and still have never heard it in person. I have been trying to decide on headers. I guess i'm a little skeptical on a catted y bcz i'm scared it will be too quiet.

Somebody with header/y-pipe/GMMG experience...please HELP! lol

Well, here's what I'm doing, and I'm in a similar situation as you. I bought my GMMG and it has been sitting in its box for a couple of months now (some idiot who owned the car previously welded the catback onto the y, so I decided to do the whole exhaust at once). I heard the kooks were far superior, so I'm getting their stepped headers. Then I'm going to build my own stainless y-pipe with dual magnaflow cats. The cats are gonna be flanged on for easy change out if needed. This is what I'd recommend you doing as well. When all is said and done, it should be a pretty tight setup.

So basically making a FLP "type" setup using Kook's...hmm. I like it!

Thanks!

I sold my FLP's and went with Jet Hots. The FLP plug access was terrible and I kept buring spark plug wires. Whoever said they weren't worried about plug access should be.

I'm the one who said i wasnt worried about plug access. No matter what header's i get, I'll have over the valve cover spark plug wires with high temp resistant boot covers also.

It won't matter....the boots burn off and crack apart due to the heat damage. I tried the OTVC kit and it didn't help. Plug and wire access are very important considerations.

I have installed 2 sets of Jet Hot Long Tubes, i actually have the install down pretty good now,

remove oil filter, starter, alternator, passenger side motormount bolt, jack the motor up a few inches and they both slid in.

the jet hots use the same design as the hooker lt's but with thicker flanges and tubes i believe, that and a different coating.

great headers, ground clearance is an issue if u want to lower the car in the future.

You saying these burn off and crack apart? part # TAY-2528 at http://www.summitracing.com

I've had them on my spark plug boots right next to some uncoated shorties for quite some time now and they've worked awesome.

I've got FLP's and never had a wire issue. NEVER. That's either w/ valve cover wire looms or the side mount wire looms and I'm running 10.4mm wires. Plug acces is pretty easy for me. I can change all 8 in under 45 minus. # 5 is beyotch and takes the most time for me, other than that they're a snap esp w/out any emission hookups. I think that's where people's problem come in.

My only complaint w/ FLP is their y-pipe. Diamter is too small. I do like the ability to swap out cats in minutes. If I was stateside I'd just have a custom y-pipe built using their clamp system for the cats but I'm not so Kooks look like they'll be on order. I can't see paying their ungodly price for their y-pipe though and that's not to mention that's w/out cats! For 2 of their y-pipes one w/ and one w/out cats can buy me another set of headers!

Anyone w/ Kooks have clearance issues w/ their KBDD subframes? That's my biggest concern there.
