Default gutting out cat

My car just got smogged so now that I am emission care free for a year I want to start by gutting my cat. Has anyone done this already and is it a good idea. How much performance/noise gain should be expected and how hard of a task is it to do?

I don't know why you want to do that. If the cat is good, and your engine is stock, you are wasting your time, and ruining a good cat. About all you are going to do it make it louder, and illegal. I did that to my '96 TA (no smog testing here) when it was stock, and lost over 10 rwhp. Put a piece of tubing in it's place if you think you just have to get rid of it. Just knocking the guts out of a good cat causes a lot of turbulance with expansion entering the housing. Most butt dyno gains from doing this have been disproven around here.

Good luck, Ed

I heard one time that if you have no back pressure or very little back pressure you can lose some torque i dont know if its true or not though.

as for difficulty, it took quite a while for me cuz i didnt have very good tools, but for my friend, we used a crowbar, then just started the car and blew the junk out. do that a couple of times, you'll notice the car getting louder and louder every time, use a flashlight and then you can see how much you have left to do. with the right tools, should only take 1 - 2 hours max.

yeah if you dont have back pressure your car loses some power
thats why taking off the muffler is not a good idea

i don't want lose power or anything but I want my car to be louder and it not to be too obviously illegal.
also wouldnt having the exhaust blow out the junk in the cat do bad things to the exhuast system?

I think it really depends on how many mods you have on the engine. If you need the extra breathing then i could see where it would help (heads + cam). I dont think the improvement is going to be more than 10hp at WOT.

i dont see how blowing the junk out could hurt your system, as long as you have it so that it just comes straight out the cat, its not getting in the rest of your system.

Dont do it...I dont know if you loose power in the top end. I say dont do it because through a cut out it makes the car sound like a trash truck.

I have long tubes, cutout, and stock muffler. I can tell a huge difference across the board when the cutout is open. Plus it makes my ears bleed and everyone else stare.
