Pulley Removal - Holy cow! Please Help

Default Pulley Removal - Holy cow! Please Help

How in the world do I get the Pulley and Yoke off my 93 Z crank? I purchased the Autozone OEM Pulley (Part # 25503) remover that looks like the one in the Chiltons Book ( And just like the one listed as the GM OEM ) My plan is the remove the Yoke at the same time. I took the crank bolt out. Installed the puller (with 3 7/16's bolts) and I cannot get the sucker to budge. Are there any additional bolts going through the yoke to the crank? I used every bit of strength and even my legs to push on the breaker bar. I feel completely stupid and have to wonder if I have done something wrong. Anyone knowing anything, please help.

When I had to do mine, I had to take out the hub too. I think it was the hub, you gotta take out the bolt in the center of it and then use a pulley remover and back it off. Then when you put the little hub back in you gotta make sure you line it up correctly.

first off to remove the hub the bolt has to be unscrewed till its almost out then install the puller. it pulls against the bolt...remove the balancer first though makes it easier.

I think I know what you did (not sure but I think I did the same thing). You are just pushing the puller against the hub itself which is why it's not going anywhere. Put the crank bolt back in but only thread it 2-3 times. That way, the puller is pushing against the bolt--not the hub--and the hub can slide on out. After you get the hub off the crank snout, then all you have to do is take the botls out of the puller, take the crank bolt out, and the hub falls to the ground. Presto!

what i did was pull the bolt out and then stick an extention down inside the hole. then place the center piece of the puller in the end of the extention and start cranking the hub off. works wonders.

To All, thank you! I believe you are all correct. I will try the hub bolt suggestion first. Believe it or not. I actually damaged both tips of the tool. The pointed one, I have a circled indention all the way around and the flat tip I have a small mound or bump in it now. When I say I pulled, I pulled. My body is telling me about it today. I thought I was doing something wrong. Thanks again.

Dont do that! You risk stripping the threads in the crank snout! Remove the bolt and use a 1/4" extention down in the hole.

Listen to TansAmDriver.
I used the crank bolt and did strip the first few threads. A 1/4" socket extension works great, just make sure it's long enough or you'll have a good time trying to get it out of the hub (ask me how I know).

I also had a bitch of a time getting the hub back on, be sure to use anti-sieze and don't over torque the bolt and bust it.

Here's how it went last night. Put the crank bolt back in about 5 to 6 turns. Put the puller on and with very little effort the yoke with pulley came right off. Before the pullley would not budge. It's an aftermarket and I don't know what brand. I purchased the car second hand and have no records. I will check to see if threads were stripped, but at this point, I am just thankful to have the thing off. I ended up doing this as soon as I got home and did not read additional posts. I believe I got lucky and did not damage the threads. I will keep you posted.

I guess everyone has something different to try but I always used the crank bolt and I've never stripped any threads. Congrats on getting that off! I know what a bitch it can be.
