Question Intake Torque Spec?

My son and I are about to do the "famous" Intake Oil Leak fix on his 95 Trans Am.

Reviewing the Haynes manual I noticed that during the Intake reinstall it calls for an initial tightening of the bolts to 71 lbs then a final torque of 35 lbs.

Is this a misprint? I can't see how you tighten to 71 lbs and then 35 lbs. Are you "backing" off the bolt from 71 lbs to 35 lbs?

Everything that I have read on this forum and others speaks of 35 lbs of torque for the bolts in the correct tightening sequence. Brent Franker's site talks about starting at 15 lbs for the first go around then reaching 35 lbs.

What is correct method?

Thanks,

DMark

71 in lbs.

Which equals about 5ft/lbs.

Get them to 15 then go back and make them 35. You want to make it so they set down even.

That makes a lot more sense to me.

Thanks for the help.

and as usual if you're using anything else besides Permatex's "The Right Stuff" you want to let the car sit for at least 12hrs to allow the RTV to seal. I also use blue loctite on the intake bolts so I don't have to worry about them coming out again

Dang..., I am such a idiot.

Went back and read the Haynes again and it does call for "INCH" lbs for the first pass! Thus TranAmDriver is correct === 5ft/lbs.

Oh well, reckon this will make a good review for somebody else doing a search on the topic.

Thanks everyone for all of the input.
