If you're on a budget, the stock chain works fine. My stock one lasted over 170k miles, and still wasn't bad whe I replaced it with another OEM unit. It's seen 6500rpms a couple times, no trouble. Plus, it's waaaay cheaper than anything else.

We need to know the year of your buddy's car in order to answer that question accurately.

it is a 94 and will be twisting to 7000 rpm's. Ben Moore(ou812/z28) is using the cloyes true double roller with very little work to the front cover and its way better and cheaper the the lt4's that have the water pump drive built on it. he just dont remember exactly wich one he has.

He has an electric water pump so he does not need the pump drive.

A stock one will suffice fine, I run one, (or did cause it aint running!) in my race car. if you had a vented opti however, and an electric H20 pump, you could go ahead and buy a heavy Duty double roller SBC chain new for about ......$60!!!!

I'm running the Cloyes 3145 double roller. It is a nice (and cheap) timing set, but it WILL NOT work with the factory 1994 spline-driven optispark. If your friend hasn't already upgraded to a 1995+ vented optispark/camshaft/timing cover/etc, then he will need to in order to run this timing set.

Timing sets for the 1994 opti are limited. You can stick with stock, try a $400 '92-'94 Cloyes from http://www.moreperformanceinc.com -- Or the $550 '92-'94 timing set from dougrippie.com. I'm not certain if SummitRacing still offers the '92-'94 LT1 Lunati set, but I don't have much faith in that set. ALL of the above appear to be standard stiff-back, link-belt chain designes (just like factory. =crap.)
