Default Torque convertor ??

Hey guys just wanted to ask a question... Kinda new to the site. I have a 93 z28 that i am setting up for a xe 224/230 cam with a 112 lsa. I have some minor head work done with full bolt ons. I had a question regarding what size torque convertor to go with. I think i decided on tci, just not sure what size to go with. I heard they had problesm with the ecms recognizing the torque convertor on lt-1s with 4l60-e's, but i don't know if this is true(Stall wall i think they called it). Going to run 100-150 shot of nitrous on top of this. Any help out there or any recommendations? thanks and any input would be appreciated..

not sure on the affects of nitrous but id say around 26-2800. what rear gear do you have? that will matter too.

You have a 4l60 in the 93, I have never heard of anyone having problems. I had a 2800 vig with my 218/224cc cam (502), and I wish I'd have gone with a 3200. I'd get a recommend a 3200+ satll for that cam. Just my .02.

You can use any brand or stall speed converter you want in our '93. TCI has no "stall wall" problem. I have some very fast customers running TCI converters. Whatever brand you decide on, I would use at least a 2800 converter with that cam.

Best of luck with your car, Ed

In 94 they switched to PCM, thus the 4L60E, 93s are the old style with an ECM, you can go as big as you want and the computer could care less. I ran a 3200 in my 93, awesome stall speed, great for drving around town as well.

I would go with something around 3000-3200 since you are doing the gears. Lt1s dont require as high of a stall as ls1s use, plus on the streets the 3.73s and tq conv. would be hell on tires.

How come lt1's don't require such a high stall speed as ls1's? Is it because the peak torque is at lower rpms?

Yup, stock for stock, the LT1's make their torque at a lower rpm.

Also, if any of you guys are interested, I know a company locally, that will build you a convertor every bit as good (if not better) as TCI or Vigilante for a fraction of the cost. My father owns a well-respected tranny shop in Syracuse and has never had a C.B. for a convertor in the 5 years he's dealt with these guys. They build TRUE custom convertors. Most of these torque convertor companies do not build a convertor for the individual car, but they are more mass produced. There is no way to get an accurate stall speed without vehicle specifics such as actual race weight, cam, gear ratio, etc.... Im not saying that the TCI or vigilante is a bad convertor.....theyre just priced high. If youre interested, PM me.

i JUST put pretty much that same combo in my car. 224/230+valvetrain upgrade(w/ 1.6 rockers), 2800 midwest stall with a 2.5 str, AS&M mid-length headers, madz28 tune all installed at the same time.

First of all, cam sounds nasty. I love it.

Initial driving impressions are good. the car drives pretty much stock...no surge with my tune. When i floor it from a stop, i spin out like crazy and once i get traction, it takes off...however, there are some dead spots in the RPM range if you floor it from a roll(stupid autos)...the cam seems to REALLY kick in at right around 3800-4000 rpms..it feels like a vtech. Knowing this, I should have probably gone with a higher stall. something on the order of 3400. However, since I am going to upgrade my gears from 3.23 to 3.73, this may make a big difference as far as the dead spots go and putting me in my power band from a roll.

Heres something that sucks about our 93 autos as well...you can't change the stock shift points through tuning. And the 224/230 cams make peak power at approximately 6200 rpms...so in order to take advantage of the higher rpm range, we have to manually shift the auto. kind of blows!

if that custom torque converter company you refer to is trans king, thats a definite no! lol Usually people pick up .5 by switching from a stock converter to a GOOD aftermarket converter, I picked up .4 switching from my slipping pos trans king, to a Dynamic, that wasnt even made for my combo... ITS MY DAD'S SPARE FOR HIS 7 SECOND BBC DRAGSTER!!!!!!!, it stalls 3,200 and comes almost to a perfect lock on the top end! Its a near perfect match for my car, maybe a little on the tight side.

No, the companies name is CTI and they build a great convertor. Previously, if we had only 1 in 15 or 1 in 20 convertors fail under warranty, we felt like we were doing OK. Since we went to CTI we have not had ONE torque convertor related comeback in five years. As far a stock convertor goes, they are pricey, but they build a really high quality race convertor at literally less than half the price of Yank. I think I payed lless than 300 bucks for my last convertor for my personal car.....With vigilante or Yank, your paying for the name AND its not really "custom".

On brand I like Edge but any quality 9.5" would be a good choice. On the stall go at least 2800, that is what I put in my daily driver Caprice and the wife doesn't even mind driving it and a friend riding in it have even suggested I go to a high stall, at least till I punch it and then he realized I already had one. Even towed a samll boat with 2.93s in the car for a whole summer it drove fine.
