Have a couple questions for you LT1 owners out there. I just picked up a 96 Z28 for $3000. The reason that I got it so cheap is becuase the syncros for 3rd and 4th are shot and I think that the fork for reverse is bent becuase it pops out every once and a while. This didnt stop me from getting an LT1 for so cheap. My question is how much should it cost to repair the tranny? I was thinking around 500 bucks but the shops I called all said 1200-1800. Should I have them rebuild it or find another T56 at a salvage yard and swap it in?

you can find brand new rebuilt t-56's for a tad over a grand. anything over that is ecess profits going into the pocket of the seller. my second third and fourth syncros were shot and had them replaced and the transmission "run through" for around 450 bux.

 

yeah...this was the case for my tranny a few months ago. I am kicking myself now because you can pick up a built t-56 for around that price. Search the classified section on here nad just fyi a ls1 t-56 wont work, but there are a few. Also ebay is wonderful, but most rebuild shops will charge 250-300 just to pull the tranny, parts they will rip you off in upwards of 600 when you could get them much cheaper, then however much labor they want to rape you for going through the tranny. PS if you do get it rebuilt...get the steel shift forks!!!!

 

thanks for the advice guys, i knew it should only cost around 500 bucks, damn scam artists. i think that i am going to just get it rebuilt for cheaper to save money. im not putting out enough power to touch the t56 anyway. i did know that the ls1 and lt1 t56s had different input shafts but thanks.
how much are the parts going to run me? all i need is rebuild kit and a 3/4 steel shift fork right?
