did GM or aftermarket make a LT1 cast iron water pump?
Hey,
I know this probably seems stupid, but I bought a water pump housing that had been converted to an electric Meziere pump on ebay. When I received it I could swear the housing is cast iron (it is hard to tell, it is painted, but I am judging based on the water pump gasket seal surface. The one I bought feels heavier, but maybe the electric pump is just significantly heavier than the stock mechanical.
The stock one I took off is clearly aluminum. The machining between the two housings is also slightly different.
I called a local parts shop and the guy there said they never made a cast iron pump.
Is there such a critter?

Unless it came on the Impalas or Caddys, I've never seen one. Every LT1 WP I've handled was aluminum. Scratch the surface on the backside once. That should tell you if it's tin can or not.

The b-bodies got aluminum pumps. I bet you are just feeling the weight of all the copper in the motor for the electric pump. Put a magnet to it see if it sticks that would be the easiest way to tell.
