yup, it is only a cap and rotor unit. Not a complete opti replacment. They are also on national back order with no real date of release yet.
and yes I KNOW that summit lists them but trust me. Call them and they will tell you that they are NA yet. I know several people who orded them and then canceld.

I talked to the MSD guys at Bristol during the NHRA race and they still don't have a date on when the cap and rotor will be released, but he did say that they are working on a complete replacement for the opti which is supposed to be an extremely good piece to replace the stock opti with and not have the trouble that the stock unit gives.

look close.. "High-quality cap and rotor kits from MSD.
Cap and Rotor, Black/Red, Brass Terminals, Chevy/Buick/Pontiac, 5.7L, LT1, Kit
The cap and rotor of any ignition system must be considered maintenance items. Just like when you change the oil and filter in your car, you should always replace your cap and rotor as a set. MSD makes it easy with these cap and rotor replacement kits. The correct rotor is already matched to the correct cap for you."
There is no way that an afertmarket opti would cost more then 100 bucks less then an OEM opti. and just like I said from the start. They are not out yet and have no esitmated date for release that has held up

OK, I'm a retard. The description in the magazine is deceiving. I found it online, and it looks like I should have just kept my big mouth shut. Looks like you're right. I thought the price was a little low for the whole unit.

trust me. if it was 150 bucks for a replacment opti from MSD everyone and their brother would have one by now. ANd thier dog, and thier cat... and any other small pet.. Especialy looking at the price of a dynaspark etc etc
But when it does finally come out it should be a good peice. One of the week points in the stock opti is the rotor. They like to shatter and fail when an aftermarket coil is used.

Thanks for the info. Do you know if the cap and rotor is what generally goes wrong with this unit? Basically, do you think I should go with the cap and rotor, or just fork over the cash and get the whole unit?

on a 94 unvented.... it's a toss up. The rotor tends to explode at high RPM because of the way it's made. So the cap and rotor would be a good idea. But if your opti is old you might consider changing both the whole opti ant throwing the cap and rotor on at the smae time. Then maybe you can sell the stock cap and rotor since it's new to recoop some of the cost.

It starts breakin up in the rpms, still makes power right up til the point where it misses, feels like rev limiter, but is not rev limiter. Plugs, wires, everything is brand new. Computer is good, tune is good, sometimes misses at 3-5 grand also, mostly about 6500 rpm.
