Default Crank Position sensor???

I am getting a code that reads crank position not learned... so where is the sensor on my old LT-1 it was on the timing cover, I was also told by someone that it might be on the inside of the motor, I hope that is not true. So can it be replaced or can it learn the position of the crank.

It's probably not the sensor, that code means the PCM needs to relearn the position of the crank reluctor wheel (so it can predict misfires etc).

The relearn (also called a CASE relearn) can be done at the dealer with a Tech II or if you have HPTuners you can do it yourself. Just follow the instructions in the help menu word for word and it worked for me.

It's common to get this code when the PCM is replaced, or if the crank position sensor is replaced.

Open up the Help menu in the HPTuners scanner and go to the very very last item in the help menu under Tools/VCM Controls (CASE learn procedure). Follow the steps EXACTLY, including turning off the key for at least 15 seconds to let the computer store the learned position.

Dang, when did they add that to HPTuners? I had to have this done last September and everyone said TechII only. Cost me $75 at the dealership.

If it still won't do the relearn, it's probably either a problem with the PCM or (less likely) the crank sensor itself or the wiring to it.

Good luck,

I had a crank sensor fail in heavy L.A. traffic last Friday afternoon, the motor wouldn't run below 1000 rpm......what a grind!! When I finally got home after running a half hour....cooling for an hour....running for a half hour, I found a crank learn code (P1336). It would not learn it's reference when hot, fuel/spark control was all messed up. A new sensor and fresh relearn made it run like a Swiss watch. I haven't seen two of these sensors fail in the past couple of years and one of them was MINE!
