Default And so it begins...(car issue)

Ok..so the speedometer says I'm doing 75...and I'm actually doing 60. (I paced it with my 91, and a 200 neon for a rough idea of how bad it was off)

How hard is this going to be to un-****?
I'd hate to start having to guesstimate my speed and end up getting a reckless or something...

Any sort of tuner program can account for gear/tire changes and correct the speedo accordingly. Have you changed gear ratio or tire diameter? That'd be strange if the speedo just got way off on its own.

See, thats the thing...the guy swore up and down the car was stock.

Driving it didn't give me any indication at all that there'd been a gear change either.

(and to make it read high on the speedo, they would have had to go to a numerically lower gear right? ie: 3.32->2.73.....if so, noone in their right mind would do that.)

Tires are still 245/50 16s last I checked

Well you should mention what gears you think you have and if you have an auto or a manual. I have an auto with 3.23 gears and can tell you that 1st runs out at about 38mph 2nd 80mph.

Also, your speed will read higher not lower with a lower gear(3.23->3.73) and will read slower if you went to a higher gear (3.73->3.23)

Car's an A4 w/ 3.23s in it.

Sure doesn't feel like anything other than 3.23s in there either...

Thats why I'm confused.

well since its a 93 right? that means you have the 700r-4. so you are just a speedo gear swap..(in the tranny) away. It's very simple. Probably the gear is worn out, or stripped or something sending a false speed to the speedo, or something along those lines. Just get a speedo gear replacement from your gm dealer or scoggin dickey etc and replace it, if you are still off, you know you have gears or something in it.

no i think its a 96. heres something else you can do. jack the rear end up and put it on jack stands. mark the 6 oclock position on the tire and the driveshaft. rotate the driveshaft until the tire makes one full turn. count the number of times the driveshaft goes around. 3.23 will be 3 and a 1/4 turn. 3.73 will be 3 and 3/4 turns.
