Default Disassemble an Optispark

What is the socket I need to disassemble the stinking Optispark. I think its an E4 but no one carries them. This includes the GM dealerships. They say that they just replace the whole thing. They said that they would cut me a deal and sell me the whole unit for $350. Are they nuts. I bought the cap and rotor kit from Summit for $125.

Also, where do you buy this freak of a socket from.

Please help.

better tool stores have them. It's an E4 invertered or "external" torx. you also need a T8 torx for the rotor screws. and yes, you are MUCH better getting a whole new unit. All you are replacing is teh cap and rotor. The optical sensor behind it can fail and you will just have spent un neded time and money. You can get brand new ones for under 300 bucks

your better off replacing the whole thing. a new cap and rotor will only buy you some time assumeing your optical sensor is not bad, if it is bad a cap and rotor are not going to fix it. you can get a brand new in the box opti from sam taylor cadalic in flordia for 250 to your door.....good luck

http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#Dal_and_Jason get prices from them first. you can also go on ebay and get brand NEW ones. But I prefer getting them right from a GM source.

The optical unit rarely goes bad. I have replaced the cap and rotor and the car is doing great. It is a very easy job. I took the opti into sears and found a tiny inverted hex handle tool that works just fine.

A friend from HPE suggested taking out one of the hex bolts from the top throttle plate. Turn it upside down and it fits on the hex bolts holding the cap to the back plate. I tried it and it worked. Be very careful when using the vise grips on the throttle plate bolt. Saved me the time & trouble of locating the Snap on rep, plus the $8.00

Also, once I got my opti apart - the optical sensor is shot. So don't believe everything you read. I have found several offerings for complete Opti's under $275.00 for 1995 and newer cars. Unfortunately, my Z is a 1993. I'm looking at $350 to $375.00..

the optical sensor failure is NOT rare. It happens very often and is worse in the non vented years. Of the 7 optis that I have replaced on customers cars, only 2 were from cap and rotor issues. The rest lost the low and or high res pulse.

If you plan on keeping the car, to hell with used parts. You never know how long they last and from my experience can actually cost you more time/ money. MSD now makes an optispark for the LT1 and is cheaper than the GM. I can only think that it would be better (because of MSD's reputation) but couldnt say for sure. Check out Jegs or Summit for pricing

No no, the MSD is ONLY a cap and rotor kit. That is all. It's also on national back order with no release date.
