I will be rebuilding my tranny soon and since I've got it down, I might as well check that main seal for leakage (oil is coming from somewhere). And since I'll have the clutch and everything off, might as well look at an aluminum flywheel. Obviously, less rotating weight is more power transfer. However, I was wondering if anyone had any realworld data on an aluminum flywheel. I doubt anyone has any dyno charts on steel vs. aluminum, but maybe track times. What about noise or clutch engagement issues? Is it worth it? Thanks guys.

It really just depends on what you want to do. Generally for drag racing you want the heavier wheel but I really think the deference is not all that noticeable at the hp levels most people are at. In my opinion, it's not an area to spend a bunch of money on if there are other choices...
i wouldnt do it for drag racing unless you have 4.10s and even then i would stay with the factory peice or a billet steel unit that is SFI rated. im actually going to be installing an fidanza flywheel in my car soon along with a replacement clutch. i autox though so i need the REVs. for drag racing you should spend more money and attention to a clutch that will grip and hold better than a flywheel that is lighter. thats how i would do it anyway.

Yeah I started thinking about it and perhaps the heavier steel would hold up better cuz I am gonna be doing some hard clutch dumps and warping an aluminum would just be a waste.
i put the aluminum slp on my ride whem i put the 396 in it, but i had no other choise, i wanted the factory one, but they were not in stock, and the slp on was the only one i could get in time to get it running, so far i have had no problems at all, and i was amazed at how much lighter it was.
