Question im screwed.... BAD!!!

im in the process of getting my motor back together. last night the onlything left before it goes back in the car was the hub for the harmonic balancer. i have an ati super dampner so the hub is a tight *** press fit but i have had it on before. anyway the bolt that you use to hold it on broke off in the crank. this is a stage 8 bolt in a forged callies crank. and its about an inch and a half in the crank where it broke. i have no clue how to fix this, if it was anything else i would be ok but i dont want to drill and retap a 1500 crank. any ideas?

That happened when I was installing an aftermarket pulley on my LS1. I thought I was screwed because it was buried in the crank. I was able to unscrew it one turn with tiny screwdrivers. (It was loose in the crank) Then I put the broken head of the bolt back in and used it as a "key" to spin it out. Make sure it isn't siezed in there.

It may not be really tight in the crank. I might try getting another bolt that will fit in flush with the end of the broken one, putting some JB weld or similiar on it, then letting it dry over nite and seeing if the bolt will turn out with it.

If its in the crank really tight about all you can do is drill a hole in it, then get an easy out and hope it comes out.

They sell kits for things like that at auto parts stores, all you need to do is drill a small hole in the center of the bolt and then using a small screw with opposite threads on it to take the brocken bolt out.

im not sure it will be so easy although i will try. when i was tighting the bolt it was tight because it was pulling the hub on with it so the last 1/4 turn i did was real tight, then i thought well since it got so hard to move im gonna back it out and check the bolt for problems. now instead of the bolt coming out it just broke so its not loose in there by any means, its stuck good enough to brake a grade 8 bolt. but i will try any logical option that will not ruin the crank... btw, thanks for the replies

when the bolt itself pulled apart, it may have relieved alot of the stress on bolt.

When i broke an ARP head bolt, after i pulled the head off i unscrewed the broken stub by hand.

If you have an etcher that works wonders in getting broken fasteners out. I use the **** out of my Pneumatic eitcher at work to get broken bolts out.

use a left handed drill bit a little smaller than the bolt, it may catch an edge while drilling and spinn it right out, if not then you have it drilled to use an easy out on. good luck.

Be very careful if you decide to use an ez-out. They are rather brittle and if you put much side force on it it will break, then the only option will be to pull the crank and send it to a machine shop. I had this happen on a suspension piece of an old VW and it's impossible to drill an ez-out, they are just too hard. I ruined several drill bits trying to drill it out and ended up throwing away the part.

I also busted a grade 8 bolt while installing my balancer hub and then ended up getting a bolt with the wrong threads to replace it so it stripped my crank. I was able to back the first bolt out because it broke right at the end of the crank and was not tight in the hole.
To make a long story short I drilled out the crank, installed a heli-coil, put eveything together and have not had any problems since.

Good luck
