Default Help me pick a CAM!

Ok, doing a 383 or 396 with 195cc heads, 2.02/1.60 valves (Trick flow or AFR). Its going to be a daily driver but im the kinda guy who likes it on the extreme end of things but dont want my brake going to the floor at a stoplight cuz i have no vacuum. Looking for around 450HP and something that pulls to redline. Ive got a 12 bolt with 4.11 gears to take the power. Im thinking of going CC 306 or GM 847, what are ya'lls thoughts? I know that strokers need bigger cams in general, would a custom grind be better? Also, 30 or 36# injectors with my buildup?.. I plan on doing the "high compression all motor" thing with no blower. Thanks for the tips and any inputs !

the cam I bought from thunder racing ( The very biggest of the comp grinds on their site) is reccommended for strokers, but is very civilized even on my little stock headed 355

its a 236/242 .555/.576 with 112 LSA (i think that's the LSA) brakes still have great vaccume, and I can still idle at 600RPMs, but I tune it to idle at about 800-900 so the plugs dont foul..
other than that its a great cam, pulls HARD on the top end, only ran it once, and with ignition issues, and not enough of a stall of converter, I still picked up a full .1 and 6mph over the LT4 hotcam hopefully when I get rid of the miss, and install the 4,500 I ordered 2 weeks ago when I get back to the states my 60', and ET will improve. THEN its time to use the Nitrous
that cam kicks butt.

talkin to Bryan Hert at PCMforless.com gm847 cam does roughly 420 rwhp based on a 383, now you said you have a 12 bolt which gives more loss, but maybe a m6 will give you some back. Higher gearing also gives you more parasitic loss.

what exactly do you mean by "more parastic loss" with numerically higher gear ratios? Anybody think a custom grind is worth it?

A custom grind may be worth it if you have the appropriate headflow data. The CC306 (mentioned above) is a tried and true cam used hundreds of times with predictable results. The venerable GM847 and the most aggressive shelf Isky grind work well too. In the end, with well flowing heads, the aggressive shelf grinds will only be a few HP off of the custom grinds. The goal is to achieve the right combination of parts and a spot-on tune...a custom cam is not necessary for every application for outstanding results.
