355 fer the newb
hey guys. as my name implies im pimping the 3.8 camaro right now. looking to sell and upgrade to a 93-97 trans am would i be better of buying a low miles car and modding it or buying a high miles and using hte money saved to rebuild the motor with a 355 kit? also as far as my understanding the 355 kit is a rebuild kit and then u have the block bored .030 over?right?
what ALL is involved in the 355 kit? just a different crank? someone please explain in detail the 355 kit/or tell me if a high miles lt1 isnt as good as a low miles. thanks a bunch guys HOLY CRAP U GUYS HAVE ALOT MORE SMILEYS THAN CAMAROV6.COM lol that awesome

High mileage doesn't seem to matter to the LT1 at all. What "355 kit" are you referring to? A 355 is simply a bored out 350. If yer just gonna bore it out and rebuild it then you'll need new pistons, rings, bearings and gaskets. Have the crank turned, have the heads milled for flatness (and maybe the block too) and possibly have the rods reconditioned.

dont forget ballancing!
but dont buy a high mileage LT1 expecting to rebuild it, save the extra money you got, and keep it, so when the opti fries you can put a nice dynaspark in it lol.. but seriously, high mileage on an LT1 aint ****, Ive torn down 200,000 mile Lt1s, and you can still CLEARLY see the factory honing marks. Buy it, and put some miles on it, HARD miles, that way if somethings gonna break, it breaks, then you can pretty much replace all the weak links with new stuff, then mod after its running as good as new.
also for future reference
350 = 4.000"bore x 3.48"stroke
355 = 4.030"x3.48"
357 = 4.040"x3.48"
360 = 4.060"x3.48"
383 = 4.030"x3.75"
396 = 4.030"x3.875"

Try searching around for info on high mileage LT1s. I'll be purchasing one soon and using ti as a daily driver until I finish college. Most of the guys on this forum have over 100k mile cars and are still running strong.
