Default LT1 Mod questions?

I just bought a 1994 m6 z28 with 69k on it. It is stock from the air filter to the muffler. My first question is about descreen the maf and cutting out the fins. Any gains or will that lead to problems?

I am looking to just put bolt-on this car and maybe down the road put a 6 or 9 pound charger on it. But for now I would like to put a full exhaust and bolt-ons. I want it to stay smog legal. My next question is what headers to use? Shorties like eddy/bbk or mid length like mac? Or good ole longtubes like pacesetter and hooker? 1 5/8 or 1 3/4? I want what will give the best gain. What are the good mods that I will see results?

thanks tom

DO NOT DESCREEN IT or PORT IT if you ever want the car tuned it will be more of a PITA for the tuner...There are many different header options.. I would go with at least amid length if not a long tube..Jet Hots are nice so are kooks or macs if you want mid lengths. Get them ceramic coated its worth it. All the cold airs will give you about the same.. I think the best two hp wise were the K&N and the SLP..All the SLP exhausts flow real well as does hooker and borla, corsa . Borla can be raspy but also some will tell you its the best sounding one..Really just depends how much dough you wanna spend..I wouldnt buy a throttle body until you really need it though because there are other things for less that will add power..You could always through a nitrous kit on it til you get the blower. Used kits are less than 500 easy. Get 4.10 gears too since you are m6 that will give you some SOTP (seat of the pants) feel.. First you have to find out what your budget is then we could help ya from there...If you say a given number we can show you things that will fit it for the most power... Hope that helps a lil and good luck

1) I'd leave the MAF alone. Just too much crap to mess up IMO.

2) Edelbrock shorties are the worst header you can buy for these cars. Check out the Macs or AS&M/RK-Sport shorties. Longtubes are the better choice IMO, Kooks are the best header out there for LT1s. But if you want to stay state-smog legal you won't be able to pass a sniffer. However, here in NJ I just take my car to a private mechanics shop and they pass it pretty easily for me.

For more info, check out the Newbie FAQ sticky in this forum and click "Basic Bolt-ons".

DO NOT BUY PACESETTERS!!!! We recently installed a set and they are horrible. The steering shaft was hitting a primary, y pipe was laying on the body. Either kooks, hooker, or slp mids.

longtubes
CAI is a hell of a gain and i think it is the first thing you should do seeing it is also one of the cheapest things you can do
Bypass throttle body coolant in about 30 min and for $2 you get 6 hp
Cat-back is overrated. Although it is a nice horsepower gain, the stock catback isnt that bad and i would do this after you get in gears, a torque converter, and a CAI
Good Luck

Pacesetters aren't that bad. You do however need to replace the motor mounts otherwise the sagging motor will cause fitment issues. That said, the two sets i've helped with fit great with no hitting anywhere. I believe they only come in 1 5/8".

I've installed many sets of pacesetter LT's with no fitment issues. Very quality header for great price.

the pacesetters on my ta are killing me they hit the steering shaft almost constantly, I've got kooks on my z and they are awesome, my ta has a flowmaster catback love the sound, felt like no gain in power though, z has a borla catback felt a pretty good power gain but it's raspy as hell do not like the way it sounds at all.
