I don't know about actual performance gains, may help the overall ignition. The only way you will see hp gians is if your losing power due to a bad opti. IMO.

Default Msd cap and rotor...

The msd cap and rotor is basically the same as stock. No gains in hp or torque. Now if your running the msd coil or equivelant w/ high output spark then the msd cap will last longer.

Everyone wants to talk up how wonderfful this thing is and all and I have heard just one report of one seeing the light of day and don't know how they guy got it. Summit began taking orders for these nearly a year ago and they still are not shipping. So none in public hands tested, you want a new cap good luck getting this one but I for one am tired of hearing about it being better or more heavy duty when it is 100% purely untested by the public. It might prove to be the best thing ever to happen to the opti but till it is proven talking about it as any sort of upgrade is at best irresponsible.

you could get summit's very own opti cap and rotor. They use aluminum posts instead of brass

so im guessing no one knows when the MSD cap & rotor is coming out? Or if it even will.
I have an opti that has 80,000 on it. Had no trouble with it before. But with all this I read I feel like I might as well get a new one or update the cap & rotor while the motor is torn apart and will be reving to 7000.
what do you guys think I should do? Just get a new opti.
It's a 96 by the way

i have had my car up on jack stands for the last 3 months waiting on MSD. luckily i have had other things to do as well. i have been checking with MSD and they say by the end of Sept. jegs is taking pre orders but i still am not holding my breath. the one benifit, at least for me, on the caps for the 93-94 MSD has provided ventalation which will help further the life of the OPTI-crap.
does anyone have a better link to the summit cap/rotor kit? that link pulled up 1 of 334 pages.

If the MSD for the non-vented optis does end up having vent provisions this would certainly be a good thing. Not for me as all b-bodies even the 94s got vented but still it would be a genuine upgrade as the vented optis are rather well documented to last better.

i wanted to be sure so i sent an email to MSD asking about the 92-93 cap and rotor kits. this is what i got back.
ME:
Could anyone tell me what the hold up is on the new LT-1 cap and rotor
kits? More specifically PN 8481. I have had my car up on jack stands
with the distributor off for 2 months and every time I call to check if
I can order one yet the release date keeps getting pushed back more and
more. As you can tell by my email I work for advance auto parts. I work
in the home office as tech support to our stores and have had some
stores asking about these as well. Jegs and Summit have been advertising
these for months and i have seen these in Hot Rod and GM High Tech
Performance in the back of the magazine were the talk about new products
on the market. The main questions I have are: when will I be able to
order PN 8481 and is it vented like the PN 84811. A big problem with the
92-94 opti-sparks is that the stock non vented caps increase the build
up of ozone on the optical sensors and decreases the life of the
distributor. Thank you for your time.

MSD:
Dear Sir,
The 8481 LT-1 cap and rotor kits are starting to ship, but there are so
many orders on backorder, that we are trying to recover and take care of
these orders first.
Thanks,
MSD Tech

ME:
Thank you for the info on that. Can you answer my 2nd question? Is PN
8481 vented like the PN 84811

MSD:
Dear Sir:
Yes PN 8481 is vented; the package includes the vacuum hoses required for venting the cap.
Thank you,
MSD Tech
