Question 4bolt or girdle?

Does anyone make a stud girdle for the 2bolt F-body blocks? Would it be a good idea for a hardcore turbo 396 setup? And are the 4bolt Corvette blocks interchangeable (I'm assuming they're stronger)? I want a bulletproof bottom end. Thanks

alot of racers I know take a 2 bolt main and have it drilled and tapped for 4 bolt main caps, one good thign about this is the 2 bolt mains bolts them selves are thicker than a standard 4 bolt so you have a lil bit thicker bolts plus the added bolts when you drill and tap. a machine shop can do it all for you.

I have been told that a 2 bolt splayed block is actually stronger than a factory 4 bolt main.

I vote for a 2 bolt block with billet 4 bolt cap conversion.

Splayed 4-bolt is the way to go.

No girdle then? Another question since I'm unfamiliar with actually building an engine. I know align honing is a good idea, what else is beneficial to a strong, tight bottom end? (and what does "splayed" actually mean?)
educatin' the newbie, Thanks

Splayed refers to the two outer bolts being angled out as opposed to straight parallel with the inner two think of it like this / l l \ that being the 4 bolts

I see. So taking a two bolt block and having a splayed (billet?) 4-bolt cap conversion is the best?

You buy the caps and have the block align honed with them and the block tapped for the splayed bolts.

Any other tricks to making the botom-end indestructable? A forged rotating assembly is in the plan. What else?

Mine is a two bolt splayed motor, was told I can hold 700 to 800 at the crank all day long. That was told to me by the guy that built the motor, who used to build motors for Nascar and Roush. I agree, 2 bolt splayed is stronger than 4 bolt factory.

The girdle trick is a Ford thing.... as much I've seen it I still see better results with a 4 bolt cap... and if you are going that far a flat bottom register cap in billet is the best way to go.

Yea, I looked into V6 Fords awhile back for a friend's Super Coupe. I was told that the stud girdle was stronger than a 4 bolt... but he was talking about a Ford V6, not an LT1. Pretty good results with the 4 bolt cap huh? What exactly is a "flat botom register cap in billet"? (more newbie questions, sorry)

Unless I'm missing something, the girdle would only help
keep the main caps square. How would that increase clamping
force between the caps and the block?
Is it a band-aid that allows the strength of the others to
keep the failing bolt alive?
