LT-1 Experts step inside...
I'm a newb on this site, but was recommended here from pro-touring.com where I've been a longtime member. I recently picked up a low-mileage LT-1 from a '93 Formula Firebird that I would like to swap into my '78 Type LT Camaro. The car was a fire casualty and most of the wiring harness and the ECM were lost in the fire. From what research I've done so far, I've learned that the '93 version is a little different than the '94-'97 versions. The Optispark ignition is different, the fuel system is batch-fire instead of sequential, the fuel rail crossover is in front instead of behind the intake. My question(s) is this: Since I will need a new ECM, which one should I be looking for? Corvette? F-body? B-body? Years? Also, can I upgrade the Optispark to the later version? Will the new ECM take care of the batch-fire fuel system or will I need to find a later model intake to get the benefits of the SFI? I know this sounds like a lot of trouble, but I got the motor for a great price and I'm not in a hurry to complete the swap. Look forward to hanging out here, really cool site!
I personally would stick to the Corvette or F body PCMs. I would say the B body is probably tuned for milder setups (lower rev limit, less advance, etc). If you get the PCM, be sure to get the harness too. Stick to 94+ and get the MAF sensor and it will make tuning much easier in the future. The injectors are for all practical purposes the same so the computer will be SFI. Only difference is the 93's had 22# and the rest had 24#. Might have fueling issues but the simple thing to do would be get some 24#s. Intakes are the same. My .02 on the opti is don't worry about it. The later version have a venting system but my unvented lasted for 104,xxx miles.
Actually the intakes are different. 93 had the balance tube to the rear, 94-97 had the tube on a grove in the upper front of the manifold. And the MAF conversion is a good idea since it can adjust to minor changes in airflow without a need to retune.
