"There is 3 plates that come with the borla. All they do is make it louder, as in almost like a cut-out. They really aren't that great because I noticed pressure would still come out of the exhaust with the biggest plate. A cut-out being welded on would work much better."

Thats what the guy said...what should I do??

It means that about 80% of your exhaust will flow straight out without going through the muffler. However, there is really no noticable noise difference between the middle plate up.

it will sound much different from the solid plate to the full open plate. there was a borla thread a while back so i remember what he was saying, and it was that there isn't much sound change from the middle sized hole to the large sized hole. there is a ton from fully muffled to fully open though.

the plate system, if you look at pictures is easy to understand. it's not a crossflow muffler that has one pipe going in and two coming out. the passenger side exhaust tip breaks off from the intermediate pipe (coming from the cat back) before the muffler. this is where you can change different plates. the different plates range from solid to different sized holes, allowing you to make all the exhuast go through the muffler or letting most of it flow out before the muffler much like a cutout.

as to the comment on it not being effective because exhaust still comes out the muffler side with a wide open plate, well.............they just don't understand any kind of flow very well. even with a normal cutout you would still have exhaust coming out the rear of the car, but it's going to be such a small amount that has to fill such a very large volume now that it might not be very noticeable. the way a cutout is designed veering off to the side like that, exhaust HAS to flow to the back to create pressure to make the rest of the ehxuast flow through the cutout. it's going to take the path of least resistance and that means the lower pressure. even if the cutout was the straightest path, it can only flow so much before the rest of the exhuast would become the lower pressure. so you'll always end up with it flowing both ways.

there is a whole lot to exhaust setups and i'm not getting into all that. a cutout placed up front will be different than the wide open borla plate out back. that guy you talked to has no idea what he's saying.

edit- i run mac mids, no cat, to wide open borla. it's loud as **** and i like it. the sound quality after the cam was much better too. i'm looking to get a Mccord Power Plate setup for borla. it's an electic cutout made to fit in the place for the borla plates and you can have it closed off or wide open. i like it wide open but my neighbors late at night do not.

I have a catback borla and i love it........with no plate it's going to be loud.(it's awesome) I had the smallest whole on before and it was loud. for the winter I put on the solid plate to quiet it down and to go only through the muffler. the plates change the volume and in some cases the tone. Don't believe what people say when they dont even have a borla catback. Just so your neighbors dont shoot you i would try one of the plates. See what you like best. In the summer i'm going WIDE OPEN

this is the ultimate addition for the borla adjustable exhaust. if the kit you're buying doesn't come with plates, just get this.

If it is between the full block off plate and no plate definately go no plate. The block off plate will give you a quiet exhaust. I remember going to look at a Z28 in a car lot with a friend and it had borla exhaust. It was obvious the full plate was in because when the salesperson turned on the car, it was silent. You could hardley even hear the car idle and we were standing about 3-4 feet away.

Loud as **** is a good term used to describe it. I love it personally, its great when you get guys on harleys to look over at you when you're both riding down the interstate because he hears your car more than his bike
