Default Vented Opti on 92...

I would like to upgrade my opti to a vented version. With all the rain and puddles, I hate having to deal with a poorly running (or NOT running!) car. I have never done this and don't know if it can be done on a car as old as mine (1992). I think I read somewhere that 95 and newer came with vented optis stock. Anyway, if someone with experience can direct me to a suitable vendor or give advice, please offer your wisdom.

I read thru the newbie mods and newbie mistakes posts and couldn't find anything related to this. If there are significant differences between a Corvette opti and an F-body opti, I'd like to know also!

you got to buy a new opti, timing chain cover, and pull the dowl pin out in the cam(or push it in... dont remember wich)

pretty envolved process, wouldnt do it unless yours is acting up.

92k on my stock non vented

well, i'm not gonna state as fact, but i'd be extremely surprised if there was any real difference between fbody and ybody (for the opti).

you'd need the vacuum lines, front cover for vented setup, vented timing setup, vented opti, press in the dowel pin, and either get your cam machined or get a cam for a vented setup because the vented opti will not fit into a cam from a nonvented car.

No you don't. You can get a vented Opti specifically designed for the 92-93 LT1s. Bought mine through NAPA when mine went out on my 1992 Corvette when I had it.

So no cam change is needed then? Is it just a bolt-on change?

Do not buy parts store optis! Mine from NAPA never ran right and it finally threw a lo res code right before I got smart and ditched it. If you want to upgrade your opti (and I wouldn't unless really necessary), it looks like the new MSD full opti is available in a few weeks. I do believe they have a venting provision and they make two different versions, one for 92-94 and 95-97. So in a nutshell, you can have a vented opti without changing the timing cover. I wouldn't swear to this though so give Summit Racing a call or MSD and I am sure they can tell you more.

You'll need to drill the camshaft center hole with a 1/2 inch bit. Not so tough but you'll need to get it straight.

You don't have to change anything. I changed mine about 2 years ago on my Vette. I had my uncle (who owns and runs an auto repair shop) order it for me from NAPA since he could get a discount. As a matter of fact I had this thread on my mind when I saw him at our Christmas dinner about 2 hours ago. I asked him just to verify that it was a vented opti and he said yes it was because he remembered that I had wanted him to get me the vented opti in the first place. Its a direct replacement for the non vented 92-93 optis.

I'm going to wait until my motor build-up to do the change. This turned out to be more complicated and expensive than I had imagined. Thanks all for the info .
