I've got Comp 950 valve springs (331lbs/inch) and am using stock lifters. The car runs crummy-tons of black smoke while driving. I pulled the valve cover off of the passenger side to check geometry and noticed that all 8 springs were uncompressed. The car had only been shut off for a couple of hours.

Pull the coil wire and crank the engine while watching the rockers. Little to no movement? Maybe you've wiped the cam. Did you do any cam/lifter work? Is there junk in the oil? Cutting open the filter may tell a big story.

if the pushrods are loose enough that you can wiggle them there is a problem either with the lifters or yur lash settings.

I removed both valve covers and had someone crank it as I watched. All 16 rockers moved as advertised. I guess my problem is somewhere else. It just seemed wierd that none of the valves were open when the engine was off.

Perhaps they just leaked down. Like they said above, look in your oil filter and if it looks ok, just get some new lifters. Looks like they're just wore out.
