Just my 2 cents. i ran a Crane 210/224 cam for about 6 yrs and ran a best of 11.40 116 with stockheads. i was planning on going to ported heads and got a Joe O custom grind that is bigger than a 847 by a bit. i decided to run it with my stockheads and get it running good before changing to the ported heads. With only a cam change i ran 11.27 118.90. This combo has not been tuned yet but i did put it on the dyno and it picked up 27hp over the 210/224 with the old tune. Frank95z

slp midlengths, 2.5" h-pipe/ duals with dynomax bullets, csi wp, 58 mm tb, underdrive crank pulley, 1le intake elbow, crane gold 1.6 rrs, !air, !egr, madz28 tuning and obd I conversion, 160 stat, accel 300+ ign box, taylor wires, ac delco r44lts plugs. im prolly forgetting a few things but it was every bolt on. that was through a 6spd with a spec stage III and 4.10 gears in a 10 bolt.

since then i have added home ported heads, super thin head gaskets, pro mag 1.6 rrs, fms cam, k-motion springs, titanium retainers and locks but have yet to make any passes or get it on the dyno. gota put the tranny back in and finish the tuning then we will see what she does on march 11th.

The real thing that everyone needs to realize is that you can have the biggest cam in the world but in order to make the power you have to have the supporting mods. If you do not have every bolt on and try to run this huge cam, you are defeating the purpose.

Do not get me wrong, I am a fan of big cams. I had the TREX cam in my LS1. But if you do not have all of the important mods you are going to, Choke the engine by not getting enough air, starve it by not getting it enough fuel, or worse blow it up by not getting it tuned.

The biggest issue with most cars not lasting very long is the tune. I would not say that my cam is that huge but it is big. I like the way it sounds and I have every supporting mod. I would be mad if I make under 360 horsepower. And I am not gonna lie if I make less then even 390 I am going to be pissed. But Remember supporting mods are everything before the big cam.

lift is only one factor in determining if the pistons have to be fly cut. the ramps and duration play a big role as well as valve size. if you are running stock sized valves, i would bet that you could get away with 250 duration at 050 and .630 lift. im running a cam with similar numbers and my ptv clearance was tight but ok.

I too want a big cam. this is going to be Strickly a drag car. I dont drive it on the street much anyway. what would a 847 do on my mods? I ran a best of 12.80 on a bald street tire......and pulling very crappy 60ft. I know I'm good for 12.2 if I can just hook.

I want to go very fast, dont car about money issues. who makes a 600 lift cam for an LT1?

You can go solid roller. I think a Joe O or 847 with 1.7s would fit the bill for you. With the mods in your sig, you should be deep in the 11s. Hell, the stock bottom end record is held by one of Joe's guys, Quickshotkimber, who ran a 10.88@12X with heads/cam. I don't see why you couldn't do the same with a stroker.

that cam is a solid roller and i am also using 2.00 1.56 valves and my heads were milled.

One thing people should also remember is every motor has slightly different tolerances, even from the factory. Just because one person was able to run a huge cam with no ptv issues doesnt mean everyone can. PTV should always be checked, its sorta like pushrod length.

Your best bet is going to be to have someone cut you a custom cam. I ran a .62x .63x cam on stock pistons with lt4 heads. Just remember, the bigest cam isn't always going to make the best cam. I have a buddy who went 11.70 on stock heads, stock bottom end with a cc503 cam and all of the supporting mods.

Hands down your absolutely correct. Loved the 847 for off the shelf, but if I had my old setup and was had the $400 bucks at the time I would have gone custom for my supporting mods at that time. Lot of good custom grinds made to fit, add a 4/7 swap like Cam Motions offers and you can pick up a few more horsies to boot.
