I've been doing a lot of oil pump and pan archive digging lately (both here and on CamaroZ28.com), and the consensus is that putting an HV pump in a stock pan is a Bad Idea. The HV pump will (and has) drain a stock pan dry of oil.
Most suggestions center on using a stock pump with the GM "white spring", part number 3848911 if you're running a stock pan.
If you're running an aftermarket pan that holds more oil (like the Canton 7 quart), then the HV pump is OK. Just don't pair it with a stock pan.
