Arrow Is this cam noticeable?

Hey guys I just ordered an LT4 hot cam kit, cam specs are .525/.525 lift /228-duration. I have no idea what that means, but I wanted to ask the experts if thats a good cam or not. Its gonna be installed in a 385 fastburn crate engine from pace, its supposed to be 430hp 430 trq . Your advise/opinions will be greatly appreciated. Thanx

That will be too small of a cam for that engine. The Hot Cam has good results, and is really good in stock engines. Those specs are with 1.6 Rockers, check that ratio, there is a difference.

I have driven that combo and YES you could tell it had a cam. Even after it went to a 409 you could tell it had a cam

my friend has the exact same setup in his 86 monte carlo ss (fastburn 385 w/hotcam AKA ZZ430(it gives it 430hp 430tq)) and on a stock rearend he went 12.9@106 in an a4 full weight.

No, the cam they use the get the 385 number is the standard ZZ4 cam:

208/221 @ .050, .474/.501 lift with 1.5rockers.

Pretty good numbers, huh?

As for the HOT cam, that is the cam they used on the ZZ430, along with the Fastburn heads on your FB385. Basically you are upgrading to a ZZ430 without the cosmetics upgrades (valvecovers, etc.).

You will love it! That motor will rip.

I've gotta say, though, that the HOT cam isn't the best cam you could put in that motor. I would go with the GM 846 cam (222/230, lift .542/.563). It is only slightly larger in duration (versus the HOT cam 218/228) but will let those beautiful heads breath a little better. You might need a spring change though.

If you've already ordered it, I wouldn't worry about it. The HOT kit is a great value.

Thanx for the info guys, the FB385 is on a 89 iroc A4 w/3:42s I will also be adding some nitrous to it in the near future. Its a direct swap right? since its carburated. I would also like to put a T56 from a 93/95 lt1 what you guys think.

You will like a little nitrous on that motor. Don't go over a 125HP with those hypereutectic pistons, and make sure your timing is retarded for the nitrous. Those pistons won't take more than 150HP, and they break fast if you detonate at all.

You didn't say what you have for exhaust. That combo really needs long tubes and true duals to scream.

That Camaro with a manual and that motor combo will be very sweet. Those Fastburn heads are great. Sallee Chevrolet often got 394HP out of their FB385's and the ZZ430 motors they saw were running 440-447.

I followed Sallee Chevrolet's recommendation for the ZZ3 motor: MSD 6A box, 1" four-hole phenolic carb spacer and it was a truly great street motor. Your combo will love those and 1 3/4" headers.

I think the exhaust is kinda cheap, it has some shorty headers 1 5/8 w/ 3" Y all the way to the back, no cats, with a cut out right in front of the Y pipe in front of the passengers door, and flowmaster exhaust. I was told that I couldnt install an X pipe because of the underbody of that year and that older camaros do fit(82-87), mines an 89.
