If you want lope, pull a plug wire.

Stupid big cams do not a fun car make, unless you have all the supporting pieces. Which if you don't have 4.10 gears yet, you don't.

I'd get the gears before the "big" cam. And at that, I'd get a cam that focuses on torque as much as horsepower. Our cars are heavy pigs. Gotta have something that gets 'em up and going. Big cams aren't always the answer. I'd rather have a small cam that delivers a lot of torque, than a big cam that has to rev a stock motor beyond its original rev limit to make power.

But that's just me. Do whatcha want. I have a stupid big cam in my '98, and I love it - but I don't drive it every day. (262/267 on a 108)

stupid-big cams for the LT1:

CC306

and

GM 847

these are pretty big @$$ cams, and require other components to be used successfully. Headers, new valve springs/retainers, roller rockers, ported heads/better heads(see Lloyd Elliot), stall converter(if automatic), higher(numerically) rear-end gear ratio. On top of all that, a dyno tune, then you'll be able to make use of a stupid-big cam. Which isn't stupid in the sense of being dumb, but more "hellacious" as you put it.

Off the self are junk, why dont you call up JOE O and get a custom cam grinded and that will make good power. I dont like anything off the shelf and would shell out a little extra thats better.

cc306 and 503 cams with 1.6rr's have some decent mid .550 lift numbers. They would be good for stock or home ported heads. Im sure if you call up one of the vendoers listed on here they would hook you up with what would be best for your application. If you arent building the block or heads then a custom grind would be a huge waste of money IMO.

How would a custom cam be a waste of money?! Loyd or JOE O could grind up somthign way better than somthign from off the shelf, there the ones making the power so I think they would know.

Agreed custom grinds are the way to go, way I'm going now in fact, but saying "off the shelf cams are junk" come on man you know better than that. There are 1000s of folks out there doing off the shelf cams and doing equal results to the 1000s using custom grinds, it's all in knowing how to setup up the right combo and choose the right off the shelf cam, they are not junk...but it is nice going custom grind to your required specs.

Ok ok your half right, there is nothing wrong with some off the self but a custom is the way to go for the most power and you can have it made to how you want it.

I mean its not much more and I think they are well worth it.

Also, some people might want proven parts [off the shelf] that work without the hassle of any guess work.

the GM847 has put stock headed LT1s in the 350+ rwhp range many a time. bret designed a cam for a road racer a while back that was in the 350 rwhp range. I know the cc306 can get you up there too.

if it was a completely stock LT1 though I wouldn't want to risk revving it high enough to take advantage of these cams. I would get comp 224/230. I rode in an automatic 2.73 geared Z28 with stock heads and a comp 224/236. the car made 340 rwhp (through an automatic) and it pulled great. had a nice deep rumble with a good lope at its 1000 rpm idle.

If you want a badass idle just get a cam ground on a narrow LSA. a 224/230 on a 110 or 108 LSA would sound pretty mean and you wouldn't have to wind it to the moon!
