Its not really going to be a BIG difference, but you will notice it.
Well the gears are going to:
1) lose you a little top speed
2) improve acceleration
I would say go for it. It will probably gain you .1-.2 in the quarter, and your car will be funner to drive on the street. Unless you like to slam it at the light, then traction wont be as good.

94greencamaro how did the gear change from the 2.73 to 3.42 feel to you? Was the mod worth doing? I have a whine from my 99 rear-end and cant decide on 3.42 or 3.73. Ill be getting a 3500 fuddle later but im pretty set on the 3.42. Is it a nice SOTP difference when changing. Also anyone else who changed from a 2.73 to 3.42 please chime in

I went from 2.59s to 3.45s and the difference in acceleration was definitely noticeable.

im still deciding on 3.42 or 3.73, not sure yet, seems it will be a difference of like 200 rpm or so cruzing around 65-80mph. i really kinda want to do the big jump though from 2.73 to 3.73, i bet that is kick ***. also cant you improve gas mileage by matching the gears with a stall?

It will be more than 200 rpm... I went from 3.23 to 3.73, and it was about a 500 rpm change. A bigger stall will make your drivetrain lockup at a later rpm, so if you are cruising, depends on your speed and gear where your rpms are at.

why not go with a happy medium and get 3:42's they're good off the line and in the top end

I have 3.73's and went from 2.73's. The difference was huge! I think if I would of went to 3.42's I would have been happier than the 2.73's but the 3.73's are awesome! The car is much more responsive and does not sit in the dead spots like it used to(a4). I must say that it also pulls harder up top as well. Gas mileage has slightly improved for me in the city and has decreased some on the highway. Go 3.73's!

no i meant 200 rpm diff between 3.42 and 3.73, it is like 700 rpm diff from 3.73 and 2.73. im thinking i'll go with 3.73. i think i will be happier. and it is like 2400 rpm at 70 so its not too bad. this all according to that calculator

the rpms really aren't bad at all.

Of course now im spoiled with my new M6. 1900 rpm at 75

I'll be swapping in 4.30s pretty soon though. driven 5 days of the week at least.

I think I ended up with an earlier 93-95 M6 when I swapped my old one out because now my 80mph rpm is up at about 2500 with the same size tires as I had before. I'm half tempted to put my 96 M6 back in. If I remember right there is a gear ratio difference between these year trannies.

Better performance off the line, lose a little top end
You go 0-30 every time you drive the car. How often do you go 150mph?

I loved the 3.73 until I got above 500rwhp, then I wished for 3.42 or a 3.23.
If you're planning a blower or turbo, keep the stocks but of course you'll get a 12-bolt anyway.

I also have the BFG's, but I have the Killer Dry (KD). If you don't drive in snow at all and only occasionally in the rain, they stick better than any non-'R' tire (drag radials, racing tires, etc.). They are wide for their rated sizes, too.

Jim

PS Even with 3.73 gears, in OD, the .70 gear makes the rearend look like a 2.61! Mileage doesn't drop much at all.
