Default 3:73??

I have a 94 Z28 with bolt ons. (A4) I was wondering, if I get a 3:73 gear will I see a faster MPH in the 1/8 or quarter mile? I was thinking I'll be quicker off the line, but then run out of steam down the track...The car has the stock 3:23's on it now.

Also, what kind of tires should I get for the street that grip good. I have 275/40/17 SS rims on it now. I have the nitto drag radials on the car and they don't hook. Anyone know a good tire, because I know if I get a gear I'll even have worse of a problem...Thanks.

3.73's have a nice get up and go, and they are real good for 1/8 and 1/4 mile tracks. I have them and I still will get up to 150mph, so you will not run out of steam on a 1/4 mile. I have the same size tires on 17x9.5 Corvette Z06 rims, and I love them. The tires are BF GOODRICH G-FORCE KDWS, and they are real sticky. I had 3.23 gears, and the 3.73's are a whole different world, a nice edge on the streets.

Yes you should see an increase in MPH.

What was your difference in MPH from the 3:23 to 3:73? Also, what was your E/T difference?

What kind of MPH change am I looking at. A 1 Mph gain, 2Mph gain?

Also, how is your highway driving? I think I would need another tune after the gear as well...

Also, how much harder is a 3:73 gear on our transmissions? I heard it cuts the life down.

I haven't ran on the track, but it is a big difference on the streets. It just makes things spin a little bit faster in the drive train. The computer will have to be re-tuned for the new gears.

Definately on the streets, a little bit less on the highway. Not that bad though. Then again, I have a cam, rockers and a different tune. Are you just getting gears?

I have a CAI, LT headers and the matching Y-pipe and an LT4 KM. I was thinking about a gear, but I don't want to have horrible gas mileage if they are not going to benefit me a whole lot. I hit an 8.4 in the 1/8 and that 60' still wasn't to great. I'm debating if I should even get them or not.

I was thinking that if I got a gear, by the end of the track I would hit O/D sooner, hence making my time a little slower. Same with the 1/8, I'll get into 3rd and it may slow the car down...

Unless you short shifting or have really small tires, you should be able to remain in 3rd through the 1/4

5700rpm with 285/40 r17s will get you to 118mph.

I have 275/40/17's. I'll check that calculator out though.

Your gas mileage will not be horrible. I ran 4.10s in my '94 A4 and the highway mileage went down by 2, and the city mileage increased.

I'm actually suprised that mileage would drop at all... with 4.10's in a 6 speed mileage is actually slightly better around town and about the same on the highway.

What kind of quarter or 1/8 mile time do you get with your mods? How much did the gear help?

The weird thing is everybody says your supposed to gain mph with gears, yet when i went from 2.73 to 3.42 i lost about 2 mph while gaining .2 in the quarter. Not a recognizable hit in gas mileage, maybe 1 mpg.

well on the 1/4 what your looking for anyway is trap time or E/T rather then MPH yeah you need the MPH obviously but your E/T matters more then your MPH. in the 1/4 your E/T will vary by tires but the MPH will vary the most with how good the tires are so what your really looking for is a more consistent E/T rather then MPH.

That's what I'm worried about happening...I know I'll run a better time, but I think the car will be slower from a roll.

Well, i can tell you that changing gears definately makes the car FEEL faster from a roll.

"Feel" doesn't really matter though. 88 fox body mustangs "feel" really fast, but struggle to run mid 14's stock. I just don't want to lose any top end speed.
