Post Compression Leak?

What in the world is a compression leak? I took my car to the shop since its making a ticking noise and they said its possible that its a compression leak. However, I think its more than likely an exhaust leak as the ticking noise appears to come from the exhaust manifold to bolt area. They also said maybe a head gasket but who knows? How do you make SURE that its an exhaust leak, head gasket, or a compression leak? Thanks

One, sounds as if you need a new mechanic. Two, you'll have to do a compression test to know if you're losing compression. That means the plugs will have to come out and the gauge threaded in. But I would say start small and change your header gaskets and get some good ones like copper or Percy's dead soft aluminum. I think you would know it if your head gaskets was blown--milky oil, running hot, sweet smelling exhaust, low on water, steam, etc.
