Question Cam gears Q??

Guys, I'm installing GM's Hot cam on my Car next weekend and I was wondering, should i replace My stock cam gears and Timing chain?

I was thinking of replacing the timing chain with a new one and that about it but a friend told me that i need to change them to after market one's.

so what do i do?

There isn't much in the way of aftermarket alternatives if you keep the stock style waterpump. A new stock set would be a good idea and are pretty strong.

I could be wrong here but I thought the 94-f-body with it's non-vented opti got a different cam nose than the vented opti and the HOT was made for vented? Hopefully someone else can comment on this.

If it shows signs of wear replace it. If not, it will be fine.

what about the LT4 Cam Gears and chain?

Do I need to Upgrade to that?

LT4 Timing Chain set is for 95-97 vented opti's. The cam gear is different than 93-94. Non-vented opti's drive from the shaft in the center of the cam. 95-97 vented opt's use the dowl pin from the cam to drive the opti.

Since you have a 94, you will also need to shorten the dowl pin on your hot cam for a non-vented opti style. I would reccommend changing to timing chain set with an oem one since you are there doing the work. If you want to use the LT4 set, you would have to convert to the vented style opti, which requires you the change the timing cover, new opti (vented), search for a write up on it. Since your car is 12 years old and I don't know how many miles you have on it, but I'm sure it's a few. I would replace the set with a new stock set (Cam gear, Crank gear and Chain).

thank you very much, that what I had in mind the first place but this guy scared me.
and placing an other order for parts and waiting for it to arrive from the states is an other headache that i can spare.

the shipping rates are really inflated now.

If it were me I wouldn't worry about converting to the vented opti or anything and just get the replacement chain. The gears should be fine. I believe you would be able to tell if they were worn considerably.

Any wear at all on the gears will cause the new chain to wear and match the gears. That why I would relpace them as a match set. just my .02 cents. I would also replace the lifters with a new cam. Since the lift is going to be much higher than they have been working at for the past 12 years and if any are worn, they will mess your new cam up. Again just my .02 cents.
