I know a little about cams, I would want a mild cam with good mid-topend power.

Tony, Tony, Tony.... guy says "mild cam", and you play the 306/847 card. Those are anything but mild. Especially with an A4.
IMO the LPE 211/219 is a great underrated mild cam with excellent street manners.

Want something a little more, consider a CompCams XE 218/224.

Much bigger than those, you're going to get in to the land of the 2800 stall / 3.73 gears being required to make the car fun and driveable again. The 218/224 is probably too "big" for a stock stall, would probably want a full size 2400 stall (can be had pretty cheaply from some transmissions shops).

Just my opinion..... if I were going to install a cam, look at your "longer term" goals for the car and get that cam. I have heard alot of people that were disappointed after going with a "milder" cam, wishing they had gone with a more aggressive cam.
It's your choice but you will love it once it's there!

And I have seen guys get the biggest cam they could and be disappointed because their car runs like crap, has no low end grunt any more, can't run A/C, stalls at the stoplights, and TCC lockup drives them crazy. Yeah, a lot of that is in tuning, but for street manners, a smaller cam is justifiable.

In the LT1 the heads are pretty good stock so the cam is the first cork in the engine, if doing just one or doing one first the cam is the right choice. On the programming, modding a computer controlled car requires reprogramming if not willing to do that leave the car stock.
There are some "mild" cams that can work wonderfully if given a chance something 210-220 on the intake can perform quite well and if you stay to the smaller end of that not exibit any "cammed" manners atall, great for a mild driver. If you want a lopey idle and all then yeah you want to go bigger.
