Default How to..create a manual fan switch!

Does any one have a write up on this and how to do it. I'm going to need to do it because it seems my relays don't like to work!

I would like the manual better anyways. Is there a way i can a switch for each fan? One switch for cooling fan #1 and another for cooling fan #2?

i personally think the switch thing is getto... i would just have the turn on time changed...

and your buddy who jumped the relays could make you a switch if you wanted

Yeah I just got off the phone with him and he said he would help me. He has some switches and knows what to do.

I think the switch thing is kinda cool. It's more of a "manual" thing. I can see you drive an auto so you like your things to happen auto-matically. Haha.

You dirty boy. Is there maybe a cheaper manual switch like that just not "SLP" I'm just going thru my options really. My car is fine for now because i'm mostly on the freeway but once traffic hits my car starts getting hot quick!

I'd find the problem before patching it with a fan switch. I have a 160deg stat, and run cool, so maybe your stats stuck closed? I'd replace the stat with a cheap 20 dollar 160deg and see if that helps you.

Thats the thing, before there was a 170 stat in there and i switched it out thinking it was sticking (before i checked the fans) and i put a 195 Stat (stock from Murrays) So i know it wasn't the thermo (i'm going to put it back on.

I KNOW IT'S THE FANS. Either some wire is loose in the bottom of the relay box or I just bought brand new (but broken) relay fuses. I would rather have a manual switch.

Basically you need to ground the dark green and blue wire at your pcm.
http://shbox.com/1/fan_sw_diagram1.jpg

But before you go off and do that let me explain why this is happening. Tell me if this sounds like you, fans flat out don't kick on. The only time my fans would kick on is if I turned on the AC. Short of that they would not kick on no matter how hot the car got. I checked fans, checked all three relays, replaced the ECT sensor checked fuses and still no fan operation.

The problem is the computer.

For some reason on these cars the computer just forgets how to turn the fans on. Either something goes out or something in the program goes haywire but it most cases it is the computer. I installed the fan switches and figured that this was something I was just going to have to live with. Later I decided to order a tune and trade my computer for one that was custom tuned for my mods.
I swapped the computers and all of a sudden the fans started working normally. Im going to keep the switches in case this problem ever comes back. Hope this helps some of you because I've been chasing my tail with this problem for a while now.

Anyone else heard of the problem LethalZ describes above, where the computer is causing the problem with the fans not turning on? I haven't checked my fuses etc yet but my fans don't come on either...

Actually, yeah, buddy's car the fans were turning on just fine and now they dont, we are checking a few things first though.

But I would not put a manual fan switch on the car to 'fix' the problem, find the problem and get the fans working right and then if you still want the manual stuff put it on there but the PCM should control all that just fine....

Thank you lethal and SRZ. Hahhaa. Cheaper is better sometimes, especially for a couple of wires. hahaha. So thanks guys. I'm going to do the manual switch and check my computer soon. I was going to do a PCM for less with all my mods but seeing as i have a new Lt1 waiting for me I just may wait.

Again thanks guys!

call jegs and order the Casper wiring kit... you dont have to run all these wires and stuff.... its a plug and play system... it goes in between your wiring harness and then the toggle switch is already cut to length to fit in your ash tray... i have it and it works very nice... i can turn in on at the track and let it cool down till my next run and it has a low and high setting... jegs number is 18003454545

Umm are you sure you have LTX specific t-stats. To my knowledge there is only a 160 and 180* T-stat. 195 sounds a lot like a standard SBC T-stat
