Default cam only lt1 "The magic wand for power"

I have been thinking of doing a cam swap from the stocker. I have full bolt ons for the most part and all free mods. I have been doing alot of reading old posts to figure out which cam will gain the most power with the stock heads. It seems to me some people feel that a larger cam like the gm 847 wont really benefit over a smaller baby cam. While some people feel a large cam is the way to go. Now im not at all concerned with MPG, and i dont care about how it sounds or the ammount of lope. The term streetable is different for everybody, but i just want the thing to idle at stoplights and not die. Emmisions are also not a concern. My question is what is the ultimate "cam only" cam? Track times and dyno numbers especailly are appreiciated, as well as a full list of bolt ons and mods. Im trying to seperate the cams the are hyped up from the ones that really preform. Thanks

Well I have had good success with the 219 219 525 525 LPE Camshaft but im also 383. but my heads are GM casting with bigger valves and a diffrent intake. not to much diffrence. I didnt want to jump on the band wagon with those other cams. and .. I Passed Emissions. !!

If I were to choose a cam for a cam only car id go...
all around cam I would choose the cc305 (220/230) or 503 (224/230).
If I wanted to make it more of a street/strip car and sacrifice a little driveability I would go cc306 (230/244) or GM847 (234/242). I would be a little afraid to run these cams on a stock bottom.
thats assuming you want to go off the shelf. for a little more money you can have a cam custom made to your setup.

Id go custom cam. Im also looking into a cam only set up and im gonna go with a Bret Bauer cam. Ive heard great things about him. Do a search for him here, lt1tech, or camaroz28. Hes very helpful and im sure he'll be able to give you what you need.

hopefully people click on the link to the other message board and read the awesome write up the guy did about the results and why he chose a custom cam w/ stock heads.

CC306. I pulled 371rwhp/358tq with this cam and unported stock castings.

Since then I added a 58mm TB and an MSD Digital 6+ ignition. After the electric WP and underdrive pulleys go on, I am expecting 390+rwhp.

No way a cam only LT1 is going to make 371

Well it did. Several people saw it too. Made 350/339 before the LTs, ported intake, and true duals.

Lookin' to make 400rwhp before I get ported heads.

I was assuming that you already had LT's and supporting mods, there is no way a cam only LT1 is making 371 at the wheels, especially before LT's, post up the chart. If you don't post the chart then there is no way I'm going to believe you.

I do have supporting mods. Here is a mod list, keep in mind that the slightly larger LT4 valves, ported intake manifold, 42lb injectors do absolutely nothing with stock heads.

11.8: 1 compression(from pistons, decking block)
JE forged pistons
CC306
Type Rs
Crane 1.6rrs
986 springs
LT4 valves
LE ported/welded intake
52mm TB
LPE CAI
42lb injectors
Pacesetter coated LTs
3" true duals w/ xpipe

I'll get the sheet up later, HP peak is 6100, thats when the heads stop breathing. Otherwise this 306 would make power way up there.

I'm no cam expert but I got a GM847 and the only bolt-on I have are headers and I made 346 at the wheels without any exhaust besides headers.

im hoping to put down some decent #'s soon going with just an LE2 cam and stock heads. only thing i did with the heads was just a valve job, some port matching , and got em resurfaced. i ran out of $$ to get the LE3's so im just gonna see what it will do with just the cam. just wanna see how much power im giving up without the heads, but in a few months im definately getting the LE3's. also im going to see if i can break 12's cam only before i do the heads or the TNT 150 shot of juice is gonna go in.

check this out:

http://web.camaross.com/classifieds/...uct=1158&cat=3

This is a max effort custom Bret Bauer cam for stock heads. Similair to the one run by JonA here on the board. I will not release the spec of the cam in this add out of respect to Bret, but the buyer will get all the information I have on it. As said before it is a max effort cam so it is pretty large and has a very choppy idle. Cam is nearly brand new. Has maybe 15 minutes of idle run time on it. I'm selling because I decided to go with a completely different set up.

It appears that several of the above folks have good hp numbers with there combos. But some have ported intakes, oversize valves, port matched heads. I run a stockhead, stock shortblock, stock intake combo with a Custom Joe O cam. Iti made 353 rearwheel hp thru the mufflers with the belt on. No dyno tricks. It also ran 11.27 118.90 na in cool weather. Go with a custom grind for a max effort stockhead lt1. Frank95z

Yea, you never mentioned any of these in the original post. you said i made 371 with the cc306 with stock heads, kinda misleading. And when i say a cam only car, im assuming that he already has rr's, intake, full exhaust, the works
