Default Ported TB

Has anone ever tried one of these? Seems like the guy has a good reputation and you get back $40 for your core. Curious if you would see any gains.

ya, the way i see it, a 52mm hole is a 52mm hole no matter who makes / modifyes it. Stock bored to a 52/58 or SLP, ACCEL etc. etc. id say save the xtra couple hundred bucks and invest it into something else and in turn have a better hp gain with a bored stock AND lets say underdrive pully and plugs.................all for the same price of a aftermarket b.s. thats just my 2cents

IMO if you're going with a 52mm you're better off with a stock rebored unit. No idle issues to deal with like on the aftermarket units. Besides Matt Blum's work is Kick ***. He also has powdercoated TBs and will make you custom top plates too. You may not see any gains on a stock or minor bolt on car, but some may argue a few pony gain on anything above 300rwhp.

From what I have read and seen on a dyno, a bigger TB is not really needed on a stock engine. You can invest that money somewhere else.

Yup, the 502 MPFI Crate Engine that Chevy makes has a 48mm TB on it, ans that is still putting down near 500hp. Just throwing that out there....

^^ ehh that's thrown out more than people care to realize. I could argue it, but think about this. GM met it's target HP rating with the 48mm TB, an off the shelf product they already had made. Why do you think GM would produce a bigger TB if it already had one that could meet it's requirements

Also Note:

The LTx intake has a small plenum volume so a bigger throttle body is more helpful that it would be on a first generation SBC or BBC

From a close friend of mine

I gained 15 rwhp with my Hot Cammed 350 by switching from a 48mm to a 52mm TB.
More Food for thought:

You guys are forgetting that GM has other priorities than ultimate horsepower. The smaller throttle body bore makes for smoother part-throttle operation, as does twin bores instead of one bigger one. Remember, the 48mm throttle body was originally developed in the 1980's, when TPI came out and engine software wasn't nearly as good as it is today.

The reason the 48mm TB is on the 502 is the same reason the new solstice uses common parts: cost. They met their horsepower goal with an existing TB, so there was no need to develop another one. Notice GMPP doesn't offer fuel injection on their ZZ572 motors? It's not like they couldn't do it; but I seriously doubt they could make a cost-effective system for such small volume, relatively speaking. BTW, Scoggin-Dickey sells a fuel-injected version of the ZZ572:

You guys picked up 15rwhp with a 52mm on a HOTCAM engine. I might have to look into that, and Bigger Heads I guess.
