If you are keeping the stock stall, crane 227 hands down. I still wish I had that cam in my car. With ported heads (no idea how good they are), stock stall, that cam, and a mail order tune that was pretty far off, and a slipping tranny (hit the limiter before it shifted) I still ran a 12.5@111.0. If I had a good tranny in, and a tune, my car would have gone low 12's easy on the stock stall, and be 100% streetable.

The cam would have to meet these requirements: Has to be streetable and reliable. I know everyone's deffinition of "streetable" is different, but I'm looking for a cam that can be used daily without a stall, or at the very least a small stall. One that idle's close to stock, meaning a smooth idle over a really lopey idle. Will give good power increases throughout the power band. And will help me reach my goal of getting into the 12's on street tires. Pretty much what I'm looking for is a cam that can be installed, run like it came from the factory without having to worry about something breaking, or being a weekend/race only car.

After reading several posts on this forum and LS1Tech, I'm really leaning towards the CC305 cam due to it's decent gain in power and smoother idle over the Hotcam. But after reading the Impala SS forum, several people are running 12s with the smaller Crane 227 cam in a heavier car.
I choose "None of the above", but unfortunately that's not on your short list. To meet your requirements you need, IMO, a very specific cam and valvetrain. Read that as "custom", and not just a cam, but all the related components.

Good luck.

I voted the 845, but the 227 will act much like it, with the 845 having the HP edge, and the 227 the torque edge. And like stated, some of the older cams are a bit lazy in the ramp speed. Look at the comp 502 and hot cam: same 218* duration at .050, but the advertised(crane and comp DO rate them at slightly different points, for adversised) duration on the hot cam will be quite a bit more. which means, less lift under the curve. the faster ramping speeds means the valves are open more, which means more power. I like the 227/845 group, but I would go with a comp grind with a similar/ever so slightly more duration figure. So if I could re vote, I would vote for the 304, or the 501(I:212*/E:218*).

ALSO! with the want to stay with a stock stall, bigger is NOT better. better idea to stay on the mild side. plus, high duration cams on stock(unported) heads don't do alot for power, other than shifting the powerband higher. meaning yo could have a flatter torque curve, with the less duration cam. but still have the same kinda power, with better maners.

If I could do it all over again, I would have went with the GM 847. Oh well. Voted for the 846 for you though.

The LPE 211/219 with 1.6s on a 112 is perfect for your application...Thats the cam I ran for 9 years in my 383! It went high 11s/low 12s with a near stock idle (very slight "hey-have-you-got-a-cam-in-there?" lope), got 24 mpg on the highway, passed the very strict MD emissions, and was an absolute joy to drive..I had it matched with a Vig 3600 and 3.42s and was a fine DD. The Vig (which I still use) acts like a stocker until you nail it...I am very particular about drivability and it was a great cam/combo...I love small cams. My current cam is a custom Joe Overton with only 226/234 duration at .050 and I went 11.36 @ 119.75 with it yesterday...

I am in the process of building my LT1 now for my 78 camaro. I am undecided on what cam also. I am looking more at the hot cam. It pulls hard and it is made by GM for performance.

A friend of mine ha a built LT1 w/the HOT CAM and it idles like the factory, not lopey and gets 22 MPG on highway. Most any cam will idle smooth if you spend the time to dial it in. The last one I dialed in it took me 6-7 hours to do it. It is 292 duration and it idles smooth and using a 1800 stall convertor 700r4.

The original owner cut the back carpet out, no back seats, no jack/spare, Bogarts, Harwood hood...Its a hard top car (no Ts) and it weighed 3650 w/ me in it before the Bogarts...I'd guess its 3580 or so now...

I ran the Comp 502 cam for a couple of years, with a 2800 vig it ran 12.4's@108. Awesome torque and drove better than stock. You won't have to rev past 6000 rpm's either.

You should include the LSA's of each cam. You will get more informed selections from the readers.

I picked the crane cam. I think that one or the LPE cam would be your best bet for a smooth daily driver cam. The others are nice but will have more lope and would require a small stall which is really pointless IMO.

I'm still debating this. I'm leaning towards LT4HC for price and the CC305 for a slightly more aggressive profile then the LT4, but better idle.

If I had a manual, I wouldn't think twice about running a CC306/GM847 cam, but I have an auto. My goal is to hit 12s all motor without a stall.

From what I can see on this site the CC305 has a pretty good lope to it.

I agree consider the 503
