Default Lt5?

I see on eBay there is a LT5 for sale. Whats the deal on these engines? I know they came from ZR1 Vettes but are they exotic enough to warrant the price? Whats their performance potential? Should they NOT even be considered?
Thanks

What I'm wondering is maybe getting one and sticking it in my 69 Camaro, either that or I'm going with a LS2. Whats the horsepower on a LT5? Whats its potential?
Thanks,
Mike

They are expensive as all hell. Not worth it unless you're putting together a show car and want a rare motor. There aren't many aftermarket parts available for them either. Just get an LS6 crate. If you're really looking at spending money go for the LS7.

what is it your looking for? performance or somthing that is rare/different.

performancewise your better off going with an lsx based motor. if your lookingfor somthing different and somthign with a big "cool factor the lt5 would be ok.

its not a good bang for the buck performance wise though

Those ZR1 engines are awesome power plants but can be very expensive. I would love to build one with a blower or turbo. Later

GM had a 3.4 L DOHC engine in the early to mid 90's so I wouldn't say it is the only DOHC motor.

I think he meant something along the lines of only dohc v8 ever in the vette.

I agree with Venndetta. Not worth the hassle. It's a great motor I feel but there are better choices without the hassle and high maitnence.

In the interest of seeing it done, then by all means it would be great but it would be a very very expensive project but you could make kick *** power with the engine too, there is a company that makes cam and stroker kits for them but again, theyre expensive. If you have the budget Id love to see it

Don't forget about the Northstar. It's a DOHC V-8 also.

As far as potential, one guy modded his LT5 ZR1 into the 9's. The engine had the stock ported intake manifold, stock ported heads, stock bottom end, and aftermarket cam and headers. Lot's of potential in a 350 cid 32 valve engine!

GM didn't even make the LT5. I think it was Lotus and MerCruiser. Still, they are rare. The LSX will make more power, be cheaper and be more drivable though.

...Built by Mercruiser in Stillwater, OK. I think I read in HOT ROD awhile back where some guy in Arizona had like 5 of 'em still in the crate. Think TPI on steroids.

THose motors are great. A guy I used to know had one he dropped in an old school Vette. IT sounded nice. Problem was he told me it was hard to find aftermarket parts for. I think he said only Lingenfelter had some stuff for them. He pai 10K for the engine. Definanftly not an engine you buy with the intent to race it. It's more for just having a rare motor in a car you just enjoy driving I'd say. I think an Lt5 in a 69 would be nice. It's a rare project..go for it i you have the $$$ I'd say.

They are strong durable motors but are more expensive than a LSx.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=50 is a good place to look for info.

Nine *****' YearOne event gallery had some pics of a TT LT5 in a black 67 Chevelle.

http://www.sgvette.com/ and http://www.acsvette.com/ both offer parts stroker motors etc for the LT5.

There is nothing like the sound of a high compression big cammed 400"+ LT5
