Just how hard is it to change your fuel pump? And how long does it take.

It depends if you want to drop your rear end or cut a hole through your car...

I chose cutting a hole since a shop was doing it and I didnt want to pay labor for dropping and reinstalling a shitty 10 bolt.

Cut a hole through your car? Where exactly. Won't the smell get inside or something?

Gotta be careful drinking bears. Those things bite.

Here's a very good site with photos: http://www.geocities.com/formulapower2/fuelpump.html

Just be very careful when you're cutting the sheetmetal -- you CANNOT cut deep, otherwise you're going to be cutting into fuel lines. Naturally, that paired with sparks = bad news.

You can usually pick up sheets of metal (sheetmetal!) and some shallow sheetmetal screws at your local hardware store. (HomeDepot carries all this in their nuts&bolts section.) I'd probably use RTV to seal it.

-I personally removed the gas tank so that I could clean it out, but next time I'll be using the 'trap door' method as well.

Replacing the fuel pump does not replace the fuel level sender. There is a float arm attaching to the level sensor, which operates entirely independant of the pump.

IIRC, there are three wires going into the tank -- gray, black, and purple. Black is ground, purple is the fuel level sensor signal (to dash), and the grey wire I believe powers both the pump and the level sensor.

Prehaps the wiring is buggy, or the level sensor is shot/broken. If you have a digital voltmeter, you'll have to play with it when you get to that stage.

*[Edit] I may have those wires confused. It has been a while...

If it was a vette it would be simple as it just under the fuel door... few bolts and your there you don't even have to drain the tank.... but every thing costs so much more..

Lift up the carpet in the rear of the car, the fuel pump is in the middle of the "hump" "shelf" what ever you want to call it. I measured out 10in on 3 sides and pulled back the sheet metal, and there was the the pump easy to get to. When I got done changing it, I bent the sheet metal back and ran duct tape where I cut, just to keep out what moisture that might get in. I havent had any smell issues or anything ever plus it makes changing your fuel pump easy for the next time.

Alex94TAGT Thanks for the link with the images. I have replaced mine twice the old fashioned way. I was going to remove it again this weekend to add a additional fuel source for the direct port nitrous and now I will make the hole.
